The best advice is to study hard for good grades along with become involved at your school (activities) and volunteer work. All three things do pay off in the end. In fact, some states give grants for students with at least a 3.0 GPA. Also, start looking for good references for college admission and scholarship applications from teachers along with community and religious leaders. I will include some free resources to locate scholarship money for school.

First, the high school guidance office has a list of local scholarships and state grant programs. The best chance at scholarships is the local ones because the national competition ones have thousands of applications. This needs to be done in your junior and senior year in high school.

Second, join a free membership scholarship search engine because there is a scholarship for almost anything. Most of these are on a national level, but it is worth trying for them.

Third, get the U.S. News and World Reports college edition in your junior year. There are loads of great articles on almost everything along with information about the schools, too.

Finally, there is a scholarship list book at your local public library. Some of these are not listed on the web.

Good luck!
