New York is an amazing city and very difficult city to live. You will have an amzing experience although.
The city is expensive. I am actually in real estate so for a studio in manhattan expect to pay around $1,400 per month. Landlords ask for one month rent and one month security deposit and sometimes last month of rent (so have $5,000 just in case). Or you can find a share in a apartment for around $1,000-$1,400 per month - and you will one month security deposit. Outside Manhattan, like queens and some areas of brooklyn are much cheaper around $1,000 or even less. Dont forget to check some areas of Harlem which i find safe and the rent is cheap.
people are courteus but the same time rude... that's because people live a busy life and dont have much time to be polite... don't take it personally... after a few months or an year you will become just like everyone else.
For jobs get a good job agency or job agent to get your job. No matter what field you are in, the competition is very high because there are the best people from all of the country and the world here!
For jobs like waitress etc... mostly like you will need to meet someone... it is all about contacts...
so get ready and good luck in NYC!!!!

Ever since I was about seven years old, I've had the dream to move to NYC. Since I was 10, I would check online to see how much apartments were, and in the past six years.. the prices raised! Something that was worth $1000 a month, is now $2,500-$4,000 a month! I am moving to NYC June 2009, and I'm still searching for apartments... the closer to Manhattan.. the more expensive! You will not find anything under $1,200 in Manhattan.. Unless, it's the size of your restroom or half of your bedroom. Brooklyn has a few great studios/condos.. Under $1500.. But, SOME of the areas aren't that great. I really recommend you to live in Brooklyn or Manhattan.. because the Bronx is not safe to live.. not saying that Brooklyn and Manhattan ARE SAFE, but there's a bigger chance that you wouldn't get shot or stollen from. I would try Staten Island or Long Island City. Somewhere 5-25minutes away from Manhattan.. all you could do is take a subway or bus to the city everyday and just save lots of $$
(SAVE approx 40,000) If you don't spend much while you live in NYC, that would be enough to eat, go places, a bit of shopping, and rent a place not in Manhattan.. That would probably last a year or probably less... But, that's a great amount to get a little settled and continue to work.
Goodluck!

To live in Manhattan by yourself, I'd say a minimum of $5,000. You'll most likely need first, last, and security deposit. And the rent will start for something small around $1,500 a month.
If you're willing to live in one of the outer boroughs, you could probably get down to just over $1,000 a month, same for the Island. If you do one of the Jersey suburbs with train service, you might be able to get under $1,000 a month.

sure, manhattan city is crammed with happy people~ xD All jokes aside, i would not say "crammed with", yet sure, there are a number of homosexuals right here (distinctly for the duration of vogue week xD). i think of that's the ambience: that's totally friendly and inviting right here interior the city. NYC is between the wonderful cities interior the international because of the variety -- despite if that's culturally, linguistically or sexually distinctive, NYC is all of it. I even have many gay friends who are not very afraid to tell people, yet i assume it varies from man or woman to man or woman. Being gay right here isn't any longer as vast of a deal because it may be particularly different states or countries, i assume...

$1500-2000 a month minimum - plus itulities. Don't forget cab/public transportation costs or parking fees if you own your own vehicle. The parking will cost $1000 month as well.
