I cannot not stand him at this point!!! i have done so much research and everytime i tell him something positive about a gerbil he comes back with a lie ... ex. Me, "Gerbils rarely bite." and he comes back with, dad, "yes they do, they bite all the time because they are just rodents. only a smaller rat." he is driving me crazy!!! will you help me to convince my dad that gerbils are a nice pet and i'm responsible enough to take care of it.

i already told him i'll pay for everything, i'm probably older than you think, and i told him gerbils only bite if they aren't handled correctly.

Your dad is right. All small rodents are messy, smelly, noisy at night and not very friendly. Ask him for a pony instead.

Ask your dad that if you can't have a gerbil, what can you have? I know the feeling, and don't blame your dad he has his reasons that you may not be able to understand till you have kids of your own. Maybe you're not ready for a small pet like that, who knows? Ask him what you can do to prove to him that you would be a good owner to a small pet like that. Arguing with him only helps him keep the conviction that you are not mature enough for a small pet. Take on extra chores to earn the right to one. Also know that even though they are very small they require a lot of care. Also do you have your own money, or an allowance that you can use to pay for everything. You're looking at at least $100 to start out if you want to do it right, and from there whatever else the little thing needs along the way.

What I would do is make sure you have like 10 facts about gerbils and set up a presentation. Sit your dad down and tell him everything you know. Tell him that you will get money to get the food, bedding, cage, and everything. Tell your dad that you WILL clean its cage and make sure its tame. Tell him how you can make it tame so it doesnt bite. Tell him how much you want a gerbil, and that its your dream. I hope you get your gerbil!

I don't think anybody's going to be able to help you with this....Nobody knows you so therefore nobody can say whether you are actually responsible are not....and I've never had a gerbil...but I have had hamsters.....When I was young....They were good pets...but the problem is they stink up the area they are living in. You also have to clean their cage. It's a big responsibility....Your dad obviously doesn't think you're ready and fighting with him won't help.....When you've shown how mature you really are....Maybe then you'll get one. You sound young....and one day.... If you don't get a gerbil.....You won't be so upset.

actually gerbils are known for biting but its not because they are rodents they just have a naturally aggressive temperament. Rats however are one of the best pets you can have they are very intelligent not to mention affectionate and they can also learn tricks. find out if he just doesnt like gerbils or if he's not sure of your responsibility. try a different pet like maybe a hamster or a guinea pig or a chinchilla. show him your research make sure you get personality in there to show him that just because they are rodents that doesnt make them cold blooded killers. show him facts stats and experiments that show pets help with stress levels ego self esteem etc.etc. and good luck!

Are you sure you can handle one, 24/7?
Are you sure you wont want another type pet a week after you have had a gerbil?

gerbils can bite if not taken care of properly. but they are a good pet for kids. they take work in keeping cages clean, feed and wter changed. it also gives kids a responsiblty. it shows them that they will have to take care of it or they cant keep it.

Tell him that you found out that some of his information is right.
Then send him to a neutral site where he can see how much of his info is not right. Such as...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerbil
edit: Im guessing that you do NOT live in California

i had the same trouble with my mom when i was 10. i wanted a hamster. she was scared to death of the thing. then eventually my brother bought it for me and she learned to live with it... it never bit anyone. then she was like totally obsessed with it! i was like "ohmigosh mum.."
maybe ask one of your friends to keep it at their house and one day your friend can bring it over.
good luck cracking your dad open :\
