The 13 stripes represent the 13 original colonies that ratified the Constitution and the 50 stars represent the 50 states.

On the American flag, there are fifty stars. Those stars stand for the fifty states of the Union. Then there are thirteen stripes. Back in the 1700's, there were only 13 colonies formed by Britain. Those were the "states" of that time.
