About 3 weeks ago a friend of mine had an AOL convo and the person he was talkin to said they were gonna gove his IP adress to the police. Nothing happened to my buddy for 3 weeks. But thursday afternoon, in front of his neighboors house their was an investigater from the PD. My neighboor asked the investigator why he was in front of his house and he said he couldn't tell (i'd assume thats normal). This raises the question to me, is this a coincidence or should he be worried. I don't know what to tell em. On one hand why would it take 3 weeks for this and why would teh investigator stay in the car for an online/computer type of issue and not come back the next day at a different time when he maybe home? But on the other hand there aren't too many bad happenings in his neighboorhood so maybe they are looking for him. What do you guys think?

Should we assume your friend was doing something wrong for there to be a threat about his IP address going to the police...

If "your friend" (might this be you?) did nothing wrong then they should have nothing to worry about.

As for the three weeks, it is not at all unusual for an investigation unit to take some time before looking into a complaint. They get backed up. Also, if they only got the IP address and had to subpoena the user's information that could take up to 30 days for the Service Provider to give the user's information.

Then again, it could just be a coincidence.

If he did something wrong, yes he should be worried. If he did not, he should be. Maybe he should a contact a lawyer who gives free advise on the first visit. Or he could go to the public defender's office.

Did he do something illegal? Was he harrasing or threatening someone who knew him? If not I wouldn't worry about it.
