Blu-Ray will eventually win out, more studioes backing it, the discs themselves, blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD discs 2-3:1.
The only real backing HD-DVD has is Paramount, and only because Microsoft and the HD-DVD group (Toshiba, and others) paid them big money for the exclusivity.
Blu-Ray has larger storage, and right now has more install base, it will win. As PS3s get cheaper, more install base, then sales of discs will really take off.
Right now, HD-DVD players are cheaper, but take a look through some of the ads that have HD-DVD movies and Blu-Ray movies for sale, the HD-DVD titles are either the same price now as the Blu-Ray or even higher priced, that's another feather in the cap of Blu-Ray.

In all likelihood, neither wins and both survive. Dual format players would then likely become the norm. Blu Ray has been outselling HD DVD, close to a 2:1 ratio this year (less of a gap since they came out), but those numbers have begun to narrow again after Paramount/Dreamworks went HD DVD exclusive.
Blu Ray still has more support, but it's not that big of a gap like it was. Universal and Paramount are the two big boys going HD DVD only, and there's enough content there, plus whatever Warner/New Line releases to maintain HD DVD. Rumors persist that WB may go exclusive, but on which side remains to be seen.
Both should survive at this point.

Hi john. Format wars don't sell players. No one will win the format war.HD DVD and Blu-ray have already failed.Sudios tend to be somewhat unreliable towards CE manufacturers,
their focus is on the distribution of software. As a result,if a better solution comes along it is very likely that support for this senseless format war will wane and studios will focus their energies on the next big thing to make them money.HD DVD and Blu-ray are not quantum leaps in technology.
Remember how quickly Laserdisc died out as a format once DVD came along. Video-On-Demand could do the same for HD-DVD technology. The music industry failed to adopt a new format to replace the Compact Disc.Technology alone is not sufficient motivation for consumers to universally adopt and acclimatise to a new format. The failure of the majority of movie studios to even support both formats is a clear indicator that history is repeating itself.Consumers aren't ready for a new high definition DVD format if it isn't spelled out simply and delivered in a manner that is not confusing or easily mistaken for existing formats.DVD would have to be replaced. HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc are not being positioned as replacements to DVD.They are simply an option-and one that is being largely ignored by the public despite millions of dollars being spent on competitive marketing. With false starts for both HD DVD and Blu-ray as well as PS3,this issue is still a state of mind for many consumers-even those who are early adopters. The back and forth claims made by both camps also doesn't do much to convince buyers that either format is positioned to take over.
Both camps are out to lunch and cannot see that all they have succeeded in doing is forming two elitist camps that cause consumer confusion and a general feeling that we all have to go through such a debacle again-after so many past lessons have taught us better. Therefore HD DVD and Blue-ray can co-exist indefinitely with no clear winner.

Format wars suck for us consumers! However, Blockbuster video did a survey and 70% of consumers opted for Blu-Ray so as far Blockbuster is concerned, Blu-ray will be stocked in their stores. As a subscriber to almost all the a/v mags on the market, most of the advertising out there seems to target Blu-Ray. Equipment reviews also seem to favor Blu-Ray. However, if you're like me, you'll wait for a definitive winner.

As many have said already, it's not really somthing to be conserned about. There are big pushers on both sides. Taking an over view, either technology could win out.
Blue ray has many more companies behind it, including disney and sony, where as hd-dvd is very limited, and to only a few headlining companies.
Blue ray also has a higher capacity for storage.
HOWEVER, as was said earlier, the pornography industry is not being supported by blue ray. Companies such as Dinsey and Sony own most of the recording technology for Blue ray, and have decided not to give porn producers access to their machines. The recording machines are far too expensive for many producers to get their hands on, so they have decided to stick with HD-DVD.
So boiling down to it. If you jus have to get your hands on that gorgeous 1080p picture, your best bet is to buy a DVD player that can process both formats. LG has a great one out (albeit expensive).
My feeling however is that the battle is obsolete, such as years back when the VHS and BETA where duking it out. Technically speaking BETA was a better technology, but, because of industry backing, VHS won. Although nobody cares anymore because VHS is a dead technology with the emergance of the DVD. I belive this will occur with Blue ray vs. HD-DVD as well. One victor will be decided, but within a few years a new technology will emerge leaving them both in the dust.

Sony backed blu-ray is better technology. I think the war is basically pointless. There will be no need for any disc in the next five years, everything will be available for download or even streamed in higher definition than we have now by then.
(that's Bill Gates take on it all too. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=12398)
But for now, blu-ray is better. HD-DVD is cheaper.

I think the format war is pointless....both formats will stay around for a long time until something newer and better phases them out.
Do like me and go neutral....get a combo player that plays both formats like the LG Superblu and get the best of both worlds.
