My sister just brought her pomeranian to the vet and he's 9 pounds. The vet said he should be 5. We like to give him treats once in awhile like after he goes potty. He only gets dry food so we like to treat him. We also got into the habit of giving him table food not realizing how bad it is for him. We cut out giving him table food but I was wondering what are some good dog treats that are low in fat?

The funny thing is... he LOOKS perfectly normal. I never would have guessed

yeah you guys. I'm aware it's unhealthy. We didn't know he was overweight. My dad is just too nice and gives him nuts and stuff like that while he's eating. He gets PLENTY of exercise. we walk him all the time and he plays w/the neighbor dog frequently. We give him a treat after he goes potty and I was just looking for a lowfat treat solution. THAT was the question.

I was told when my dog was that over wieght by my vet to only feed the dry food and cut out everything else. No table scraps or treat. If you choose to give treats subtract that amount for the feeding ( dry food)

Wow he is really really overweight that isn't healthy.
That is putting a lot of stress on his joints and his body.
You need to get the weight off him little by little. Not a sudden weight loss but, a slow gradual weight loss.

Get a high quality dog food that is LITE. Feed the amount for overweight dogs.
NO table food. Table food makes them fat.
Take him for longer walks for a longer period of time.
You can give him a few cooked green beans as a treat. OR some cooked sliced carrots.
You need to cut back or your pom isn't going to have a very healthy long life.

If you are feeding dry kibble, check the ingredient label. If the ingredients contains very high amount of grain products it could cause wieght problems in dogs. Carbonhyrdates to dogs are like fat to humans. I use Candiea which is high in protein mixed with Homestyle Select. That could be a problem. I also feed my dog treats daily some table scrap (never too much).

I have a pom Same deal overweight and it is really important to feed only Science Diet and nothing else they more than likely wont take to this well but after a few times things go well My pom really liked the canned but you can try the dry to see if there is a preferance it is spend y but as in my case much more spend y taking them in for leg surgery due to be overweight Also take them out someplace to chase chipmunks and little stuff they never cauch them but get a lot of exercise tring, Hope this helps

Carrots and frozen green beans. Dogs usually like both. Also, my dogs love apple slices. you want to cut his food back and stop giving him treats except some fruit and veggies. You are shortening his life by making him obese. He is almost twice the weight he should be!!
