No, I enclose a card with a note. I hate it when people write stuff on the inside covers of books but I know people who don't mind. I guess it depends on who you're giving it to and what the book is about. If it's a little gag book, write away. If it's a serious piece of literature, leather bound, etc. don't write in it. You want to treasure the book in its original form. At least I do.

I'd definitely write something personal, maybe include a card that you have personally written and a nice bookmark with the new book.
But I'd probably not actually sign or personalize a book. I think I'd leave that for "Author signing" and the new owner of the book to inscribe as they wish.

I got a book from a friend for Christmas and he put a note in it. I got really upset. Books are something that I adore! And, when someone thinks they have the write to muck up my book, it makes me mad. They're giving the book to ME. If I want to write in it, then I'll do it. If I want them to write in it, I'll ask them to. But, it's my book, so don't write on it.
I apologize for my crazy reasoning.

I think it is appropriate to right a little something. It could be a book associated with whatever that book could be about or relevant to that person's life. So write on!

I am a bibliophile. I do not damage books. My fingers are trained not to leave acid marks or stains on book covers. If they are old, I wear a breathing mask and gloves. I enclose a separate greeting card if I do so.

Ofcourse! If u do, then whenver, he/she opens the book then he/she will remember that yes, this is you who gave that gift. And that's the whole point of giving a gift!

Sure, write on the inside of the cover, or write on a nice piece of stationary. Include a bookmark, nice inexpensive touch.

Well, I wouldn't write IN the book. Like.. I'll stick a post-it or something, but I wouldn't write DIRECTLY into the book.
just in case they want to do something ELSE with it later on (like return it or something....), they can do so. It won't be "damaged".
I add a complementary bookmark sometimes, though

I always do- since I think the gift is more in the thought behind it than the actual gift.
