What a coincidence, I'm stuck off college at the mo. I had a filling a while ago and the nerve has gotten enflamed. I've found the only way to keep the pain away is have chilled water in my mouth. It is quite soothing, but I find I am having to spit out and refill every few seconds. Very annoying but it's the only thing that works. I also have to avoid warm drinks like the plague. If your toothache is from an OPEN nerve, avoid drinking on that side full stop, clove oil will help, I've had something called Anbasol which has clove extract in it. But the problem with these oils is that you have to reapply every 20 minutes and they do sting initially.

Well at this hour there's not much point in telling you to get something from the pharmacy. If you are over 18 try dipping a cotton bud into whisky and dabbing it onto the area around the tooth and the tooth itself. I've never tried it but my mum has and says it works. You should also make an appointment with your dentist as soon as you can.

See a dentist. She will take x-rays and determine if there is a cavity, cracked tooth, or abscess.
In the meantime, take ibuprofen (like Advil). An adult can take up to four, four times a day. Also, floss very well around the tooth. You may have food stuck which is causing the gum area to be painfully inflamed.
When you speak with your dentist, let her know if it is sensitive to cold and/or hot water.

What kind of toothache is it? Need more details? But in the meantime....don't eat hard, chewy candy and don't chew on ice. Those are two things that make a tooth ache more!

Go to any Wal-Mart, K-Mart, drugstore etc. and get something like Orajel. If you can't locate just ask pharmacist or clerk. Toothaches can be the worst pain in the world.

As a temporary measure, take an anti-inflammatory, such as Aleve or Motrin. Long term, you're going to have to see your dentist and determine the cause and treat the problem.

Clove oil is the best home remedy for toothaches. Even dentists use it. I found the information at http://aches.in/toothacheremedies.html useful

Go the pharmacy, buy some Orajel and put in on your gums to relive the ache. Sitting here and waiting for cheaper solutions will not help.

they say use a clove if it is a whole causing the problem put it in it..... but to be honest a dentist is the only answer, an anti inflammatory tablet will also give relief if swollen
