why's life cruel?
because people are cruel
because the earth is temporary, unstable, hard to predict
because actions have consequences
because people choose to view it as cruel
why do bad things happen to good people? the same reason bad things happen to bad people. it's called the domino effect. everything that happens influences something else on earth or in Heaven. if a guy, unpromted one day, just decides to push a cyclist, out of some sick humour, he may do it. if he succeeds, the cyclist may or may not fall. if he falls, he may or may not hurt himself. either way, he'll either be ticked or laughing. if he gets ticked, he may answer someone else rudely because he's ticked. so now the person he answers rudely may obssess over being answered rudely and may perform poorly at work. their poor performance may result in getting fired. they get fired, their family suffers.
all it takes is one good thing, or one bad thing to start a chain. each person has free will to behave how they wish, and to do what they wish. when someone chooses to do wrongfully as they wish, then a chain reaction can start and errupt, or be stopped somewhere along the way.
in terms of God causing bad things to happen, that's really something you have to take up with Him. sometimes, he has to test you. sometimes, he has to let something happen. ultimately, God is sovereign, and He knows best. really, I don't think that even if He told us each time why He did something it would turn out so well. imagine the conversation:
"God, why'd you let me break my leg?"
"well it was simple. you needed to learn a lesson in faith. you needed to learn to trust me to heal you faster than the doctors predicted"
"and why did it have to be a truck that hit me? why couldn't I break it in some more humane way?"
"oh the truck driver was already coming"
"but then why didn't you just stop this event from happening and teach me some other way?"
"this was the best way. you see, I designed your soul, so I know what makes it tick and what works best. by letting the truck hit you, you get to learn your lessons: trust God, and let justice be served. and cuz I stationed officer John Smith near where it happened, the truck driver knows never to drive while on a cell and Smith made his quota. everyone wins"
"I still think it was cruel"
"I knew you would"

Do you have a house or a roof over your head? Do you have food you can eat? Are you dead? Do you have a family member still living? Wait? You have a yahoo so you have computer access, right? If you said yea to any of these, God is real. Even though bad things happen to you, good things happen to. If God isnt real, how would we be living. bad things happen to good people because everyone has a dark side. Life is cruel because it teaches you a lesson. Tell me, if you if you steal something or someone and go to jail for 12 years or whatever, are you gonna want to do it again? Most likely, No. Life is a lesson to be learned and life IS a highway, bumpy, sometimes with hills and you have to keep traveling and follow the map of God or you WILL get lost on Devil Road. I will pray 4 u.
Remember:
Everything happens for a reason.
Good Luck, and dont give up!
God Bless You,

this is not what God meant for this earth at all. Adam and Eve wanted to rule themselves and we have had 6000 years of human rulership and it has been from one wrotten government to the next. Religion uses our emotions and love for God to forment war and in Jesus day the pharisees were rich money lovers and didn't care about the people at all.
so they were not any better than the courrupt governments that they supported.
But Jesus didn't back those pharisees nor does he back the courrupt governments and religious organizations today.
this earth could be a beautiful paradise and in the future it will be. The earth has done nothing wrong it is the wicked people. Jesus said "the meek will inherit the earth"
(Psalm 37:9-11) For evildoers themselves will be cut off, But those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth. 10 And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more; And you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be. 11 But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.
(Psalm 37:29) The righteous themselves will possess the earth, And they will reside forever upon it.
(Proverbs 2:21-22) 21 For the upright are the ones that will reside in the earth, and the blameless are the ones that will be left over in it. 22 As regards the wicked, they will be cut off from the very earth; and as for the treacherous, they will be torn away from it.

Life is cruel because we are inherently weak, and try to pretend otherwise. We all suffer, but try to continue on with our lives as if we were fine, just because that is what everyone else does. If you fall, you either must get back up, wipe away the tears, and get back to work, or get trampled.
If there is a God, he cannot help you in any direct fashion. God helps those who help themselves.
Faith is unnecessary to go on, all you need to have is hope that maybe happiness and stability are possible in life.
Bad things happen to good people becasue justice is a fallacy. We just need to move on, and hope for the best. We can try to help the unfortunate, but we cannot help everyone.
Whoever told you that life was fair?

In the Buddhist tradition, the realization that life truly is suffering. That sounds pessimistic but a lot of people run around blindly stating "love is life, happiness is life, etc" but fail to understand those are mere opposites of "suffering" such as "hatred" or "depression." Without love, there is no hate and vice versa.
Life can be cruel but you must learn to accept the good with the bad. Many, like the above example, will focus on one side of the equation. Pessimistic people always see the bad, optimistic people always see the good, and in the middle are the realist, who always see both sides.
Life sucks but life can be grand. If someone suffers, someone is not. It's a giant balancing act.
Now, is God part of that? I don't tend to think so, I think that would imply a paradox of opposites (God versus no god, Hot existing without reference to cold, up existing without reference to down)

Life is neither cruel nor not cruel.
Life, however, is full of bad things. Once we realize that we can start to learn how to deal with the tragedies in our lives in a way that lets us keep enjoying life in between the tragedies.
God made people capable of making their own decisions and they screwed it up. It's not God's fault. He knows if he steps in and tries to fix things then everyone will lose their free will.
If we focus on what's bad in our lives we'll waste our whole life being depressed about things we can't change. Instead, if we allow ourselves to learn from the bad things and take great pleasure in the good, we'll be happier, live longer, and be a blessing to people around us.

I know how you feel, the best way to overcome this is wait on God and while you wait and pray for Him to restore your faith read Psalm 23 and 72 and 73
Jesus said;
31"Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat;
32but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers."
don't give up on the brink of a miracle, there is no turning back (nothing back there)

The problem is in north American culture and religion is that people are encouraged to remain as childish and immature as possible.
So when REAL troubles start to hit life, people crumble like a wall made of cheese. People aren't grown up enough to think for themselves, they just continue to parrot the same old lines and wonder why their troubles don't magically wish themselves away.
Faith? Religion? These are worth absolutely nothing when they stand by their own (ego). They are empty useless dressings.
Life happens. Bad things happen. Good things happen. It doesn't matter if you are good or bad, it just happens.
You have to grow to be a positive force in your life, not to bully your way through it but to ride out the waves and continue on a path to doing good work in your life with constancy and courage.

Adam and Eve had it made, but they chose to disobey God and thus lost perfect union with him. Evil or "cruelty" does not have an actual existance, it is simply the absence of good. So what you are experiencing is an absence of goodness, which is the same thing as saying the absence of God. There are three things which manifest this absence (evil) to us: the world, the flesh, and the devil. The world is evil because all of us, in varying degrees, have rejected God and thus treat each other with hatred. Our flesh is not evil in itself but to the degree that God is absent from our soul, the body can dominate the soul and encourage us to commit evil acts to satisfy its demands. The devil is entirely evil because he has completely rejected God. Insofar as we also reject God we open ourselves to his hatred. The answer to your experience of cruelty is to learn how to withdraw yourself from the things where cruelty abounds, which of course means to immerse yourself in God. There are at least three ways you can do this. Firstly, you must pray. When we pray God enters into our soul, which is the reverse of what happens when we sin. The more God enters into your soul the more you will be protected from the cruelty of the world, the flesh and the devil.Secondly you must try your best to stop sinning. When you sin you drive God's presence from your soul, and that leaves you more vulnerable. The third thing you can do is spend time in a church. I am Catholic and when I walk into a church I can feel the oppression of evil lift. It is a place where the world and the devil are not welcome. You still have to deal with the flesh, because your body is always with you, but much of your burden will be relieved.

Life is difficult.
That's all there is to it. Life is not cruel, you have to make life work for you, don't give up. Listen to a couple of good Grateful Dead live shows, eat well, exercise, get a good nights sleep, and always do the next right thing. This too shall pass.
