You need to Google a lot of FBI mafia material.
From what I understand, the mafia was seriously weakened by the FBI and is not what it used to be.
Historically, the high point of mafia culture was probably World War II, with the likes of Lucky Luciano, and Carlo Gambino later as well.
The mafia mattered then because the U.S. was fighting the Nazis in Italy and needed the mafia's Italian connections. This is one of the reasons Lucky Luciano was so influential at the time.

Chicago just finished the " family secrets" trial involving Joey the "clown" Lombardo. They were involved in killing Tony " the ant" Spilotro and his brother. Joe Pesci( sp) played this part in "Casino" I think. Tony and his brother were beaten badly and then more or less burried alive in a cornfield just inside Indiana. Lombardo apparently ordered the hit.

This case covered 18 murders and you can probably get all the reading material you want by looking up the Chicago Tribune.
