Some peoples lives were so bright and loving that in death it shined trough with such a glow that people needed shades to stand near their grave.

Probably a little of both. Some people don't think it is appropriate to show strong emotions in public places...I know I've put on my sunglasses indoors when something has made me "tear up" (funeral or otherwise) because I didn't want others to see my tears...I'd call that privacy. I also know people that feel guilty when they aren't able to cry at a funeral...they might put on sunglasses to hide their eyes from others because they don't want other people to look down on them too.
...and then if you're like me, I just can't handle bright lights so if I'm outside and the sun is shining, I'm wearing sunglasses.

Well, there are two reasons that someone would wear sunglasses at a funeral:
1.) To hide the fact that they are crying, or/and showing emotion [for example, men might not want to show their 'sensitive' side]
2.) Who knows, it could be a reallllly sunny day! Maybe the funeral takes place outside, and the person would like to protect their eyes from the sun. That would be logical.

People deserve the right to grieve privately if they wish. Some men may feel a societal pressure not to cry. Some people are clearly vain about their appearance, and do not want to be seen with red eyes.
But I agree with the consensus. Eyeglasses at a funeral is sort of a "Hollywood" thing. I have never seen eyeglasses in attendance at the funerals I have attended.

To avoid having people speculate on your feelings by being able to see your eyes. Some people are in control of their emotions, even though they feel deeply. Some are sufficiently aware that others are talking about them (especially widows who will inherit a good bit of property), and they just don't want to cope with them. Women used to wear black veils for the same reason. Now sunglasses are more common, and easier to cope with.
I don't see it as living for the audience. I see it as avoiding that phenomenon at a time when it's just too hard to care what other people think.
P.S. I'm a widow myself; I know how people speculate. Some "friends" are even willing to "help" by telling you what the others said behind your back. With friends like that, who needs enemies?

NOOB ALERT!!! Why does this even bother you hon? I have been to many funerals and haven't seen a pair of sunglassess until people get out into the sun and drive their cars. Your sunglass theory just proves that you watch too much television. Why don't you also ask why do women always wear big hats and veils over their faces when they are at funerals? LMBO!!!

I've never seen anyone with sunglasses at funerals, either, but one would assume that people wore them to keep the sun out of their eyes.

I wear prescription sunglasses all the time. My eyes are very sensitive to sunlight because of fluorescent lighting has damaged them to natural light. As a child we had regular light bulbs in school and then they slowly started putting in the fluorescent lighting and damaged my eyes. I do not have any fluorescent light bulbs in my home.Be warned fluorescent lights can damage and make your eyes very sensitive to natural light.
As to why people wear sunglasses at funerals, especially at graveside is because of crying and the sun.

A bit of both I guess. And it's only human, I always look awful when I cry so I haven't done it in public since I was eight or so (my eyes go puffed and red, my nose goes red, my mouth gets red and puffy - eugh its not pretty!)

I think mostly its to keep the sun from their eyes. Your just reading too much into it. Its normal for people to cry it a funeral and a person is very vain to hide it.
