Do you think drugs played a part in "spiritual revelations" of the '60's and '70's?

I don't believe so at all (not about the drugs but about the duo). People love to create stories of contention (and don't get me wrong, I'm sure there were times of contention as in any relationship) but Paul & Artie's split in 1970 happened for many reasons. Art left to go film "Catch-22" in Mexico. Paul wrote my favorite song in the world about missing him, "The Only Living Boy In New York". (Art is the "Tom" of that song, as teens Paul and Artie were known as "Tom & Jerry" and had one hit single called "Hey Schoolgirl". It's awful, but I love it.) ;-)

No, much like the Beatles, the intense pressure of being with someone every single day that you've known through grade school and are NOT in love with, amidst a backdrop of fame, is extreme pressure. Art moved on to his acting career. Paul missed him but it was the perfect time for him to go solo anyway. He'd been thinking about it for a long time I'm sure - especially since he wrote all the lyrics and all the music and probably was a bit jealous Artie's voice got so much attention in the press. He's human. I love the Beatles and I see so many people blaming Yoko & Linda for the break-up, but these were 4 guys that had been together for 14 years - every single day. It's a surprise they didn't all kill eachother! It's sad that things got contentious but it seems in the end (no pun intended) that all worked out. I know Paul and Art have had their problems as well but I think they just traveled in different social circles. I'd ask Paul what may have been said between the two of them but he's tied up in my bed right now with duct tape over his mouth. Aw, he loves it!

As for the 60s and 70s drugs were most certainly a piece of some spiritual revelations, although none of the S&G songs sounded like the two were dropping any acid. :-) I've heard from good sources that Mr. Simon is a bit of a toker. I think nearly every musical group of that era did drugs and if they didn't, they were or at the very least were related to the Cowsills.
Come on! Even Marjoe Gortner was getting high back then. Poor kid.

Citing personal differences and divergence in career interests, they split following the release of their most critically acclaimed album, Bridge Over Troubled Water, in 1970.
