I have a 12 weeks old Yorky, we tried to take him for evening walks, but all he does is lay flat on the ground, basically like a piece of rug, refuse to even walk one step, but he'll follow us without a leash, when we go for walks. I'm afriad one of these day he might get run over by a car. So what can I do to make him walk with a leash?

Put the leash on him in your home, that is where he is comfortable. Hold it and tell him to come. Use his own food as treats, when he makes the smallest move to you--give him lots of verbal "goodboys" and give him a piece of his food.
Continue to walk a distance away, holding the leash--say "come" and a treat. Take him outside on the leash, say come and if he moves toward you, give him a treat. The world is big and he may feel frightened outside, reassure him, and continue to gently urge him to come to you--while on the leash. Once he understands that good things come from being on a leash, you will have gotten the message through. Be patient and don't give in. But don't drag him either--that is not productive. Verbal praising is always good.

I had this same problem with my schoodle. She's about the size of yorky. At first she absolutely hated the leash and fought it everytime she was put on it, so we would go outside with her and just follow close. When it got to the point where she could outrun us though, we had to use the leash and after a couple walks she was pretty used to it. She still doesn't like it, but it's for her own good. You just have to be persistent. Reawrding her for moving is definitely a good idea. Good luck!

I think he is just a little skeptical. Spoiled too possibly. If he knows you'll remove the leash, that is what he's waiting for. Don't let him get away with this. Keep trying the leash. He'll eventually get used to it and realize he has to walk with it on. Maybe try it in little time frames in the house. Maybe 5 minutes or less at a time until he gets used to it and add minutes on. He'll get it. Remember he's still a baby.

Put the leash on and start walking. Ignore him if he doesn't move and just keep on going. He'll get the idea. Reward him when he moves.
He's throwing a fit, and he knows that throwing a fit gets the leash off. You need to show him it doesn't work.
Walking without a leash is not safe.

u have to get him used to the leash. start by putting the leash on him and letting him drag it around the house but watch him so he doesnt get caught up or tangled. next pick the leash up and walk with him and just let him lead u a little then drop it. do this several times a day. then u need to pick up the leash and start leading him around and eventually get closer to the door until u r out and then get further and further from ur home

Buy your yorkie harness instead of using a collar. Its problly choking the little pup. Yorkies has small fragile neck. Don't pull them also, call their name. I have a yorkie myself, I've been thru it before. Hope it helps!

I found this website that may be of help to you. Also, using a harness until he gets used to you controlling where he goes helps...keeps from choking.
I don't know why some dogs are like this at first; I've have a couple myself, though. Good luck and enjoy...that's one of my favorite breeds.

when you are in the house not walking him, sometimes put the collar and leash on him just so he can get used to it. just slowly try to get him used to it and when he does what he is supposed to do, give him a treat.
