I had a Shih Tzu with a TERRIBLE coat. I changed his food over to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul and his coat improved 200%!! Both my vet and groomer were amazed! (My groomer even changed her food over to the Chicken Soup.)
Give it a try. The worst thing that could happen at this point would be no improvement!

Often a diet of commercial food is linked with skin problems such as allergies, itching, odours, poor coat and dry flakey skin. Dogs do not need (in fact cannot properly digest) any of the grains, vegetables or dairy that many of these food contain. Feed her a natural carnivore diet of meat, edible bones and offal. Make sure that she is getting adequate amounts of fat as that will help her dry skin too. Some people add omega 3 or fish oil but I prefer not to add any supplements.
My raw fed dog has sparkling white teeth (with no doggy breath) and a glossy coat that requires little bathing. In fact usually the only baths she gets are after rolling in something horrid at the park. Yes, she is an indoor/outdoor dog.
**sometimes when dogs are changed to a better diet they may lose more coat for a while. This is because the old hair is shed to make room for the new healthy growth. The new coat will be lush and shiny.

Dogs only nedd bathing every couple of months or so......you will just strip all the natural oils from his coat. Get some proper dog shampoo.....'Exmarid' is a good one....it will help to stop the itchiness....and start giving the dog some cod liver oil. It will help with his coat, and will also help to keep his joints supple as he grows older. Stop the over-bathing though....thats the main problem. Get yourself a good chamois leather, and just 'polish' the dogs coat regularly with this, he will have a lovely coat again in no time at all.

You should only bath the dog once a month if even that often because bathing too much will cause their skin to become very dry and irritated. Bathing too often also takes off essential oils on their skin. Use a dog shampoo from the pet store that contains oatmeal to help with the dry skin and it will help the coat also.

Healthy oils and fats improve the dog's coat. The simplest thing that I have found is to use Missing Link, as directed. It has Flaxseed oil and Omega-3. You should be able to find it at the local feedstores or petstores.
A small bag will cost about $25, but you only feed about 2 tablespoons per day.

The first step to your dog having a better coat, is to feed her a better quality food. Feeding foods like Solid Gold or others like it can drasticly change your dogs coat for the better. Those types of foods, foods that have no by-products, fillers, corn, glutens, etc are much better for your dogs. And contain ingredients to help maintain a healthy skin and coat!
And yes bathin can cause severe dry skin in most dogs. Try brushing her very frequently. Brushing will distrubute her natural oils and keep her coat clean.

You may need to change her diet, or add supplements.
Bathing too often can dry out the skin.
Also if you don't get all of the shampoo off, it can cause the skin to become dry and itchy. The last place shampoo usually stays on the dog is where all four legs meet the body.

firstly stop bathing it so much as you are drying out the natural oil in the coat,
try using cod liver oil poured onto the food or salmon oil which is a little more expensive but you get what you pay for, also gently groom every day to stimulate the natural oils

Hiya, you can get supplements to put in her food, evening primrose oil is a good one for the skin and coat, also... you may not like the sound of it but feeding raw tripe gives your dog a gorgeous coat and is full of goodness for them, you can mix it in wuth her regular food, you can also purchase coat oils, these will help it to look good while the coat is recovering. x
