I have a U.S.A. passport and reside in the UK with UK residency stamp. My current US passport is about to expire later this year and has indefinite leave to remain (UK) stamp in it. Will I have to reapply for 'indefinite leave to remain in UK'status when applying for a new US passport?

Absolutly not. One has to do with your US citizenship, one has to do with your residency in the UK. Completly independent things. You will need to keep your old passport though. The US officials may ask for you old passport back to process it as now being cancelled, if you explain it to them why you need to retain it they will cancel it on the spot for you.

When you travel in & out of the UK you will need to carry both passports, one to show your citizenship status (new passport) & one to show your immigration status (old passport).

Absolutely, you can apply for a new passport and the old one will be cancelled and returned. Normally, you would need both to show proof of your status in Britain, so this shouldn't be a problem. However, by all means contact the embassy and the British office that issued your residency stamp to confirm that, before your passport runs out.

As another said they will let you keep your old passport but punch some holes in it. I'm 43 and have a stack of old passports going back to when I was 3.

Call the emabassy and go there if you have to. They will explain all. Your UK status and US status are two different things. Do you have the paperwork that said your were eligible for the UK status? If not go to an office, show your visa and request some documentation.....it is not an unuasual request.

Take a photocopy of your Indefinite leave to remain visa - for yourself. And then just apply for your new US passport. When you receive the new one you will probably have to send it off to get a new stamp put inside. You may be asked to send them your old US passport as evidence. :-)

When the Passport expires then the rights in that Passport expire too.Your old one will have no value at all in spite of the earlier comments here.

oh wow does that mean as I have an indefinite visa for the USA in my last passport that it is OK to stay as long as I like in the USA, even though I have a new passport?
