How to correctly use "ergo" in an english paper, or to use it at all?

In most circumstances, best not to - unless it is part of a quote such as "cogito ergo sum", or unless you are prone to littering your papers with latin words.

I believe it means "therefore," but using it seems a little bit pretentious to me.
