None of the above. I pick out the car I want, what I want on it, where I want to buy it, and then take a salesperson with me to make the deal. I don't want to get swindled!

Use your eyes.
Rule 1: Look at the car from every direction.
Get down and dirty. Underneath the car your looking for slight twists in the floor, worn rubber bushes, loose parts, oil leaks and anything that does not look right. Look allong the roof from front to back, visa versa, from side to side, from corner to corner and look for ripples that would suggest a previous accident.
Tap the wings and doors gently with your knuckle and listen to the sound. A cheep replacement "factor" wing for instance will sound slightly different to the original.
Rule 2: Look at your suroundings.
Does the area suggest that HP payments could have been kept up or not. Is it a housing estate or an industrial estate with small rented units. Are there any car wrecks of the same model lying around that have maybe been cut in two.
Is there a for sale or sold sign outside the house. Could be they have to sell. HP payments again.
Check the tax disk even old ones. Check old and new MOT's for consistency in mileage record. Check the serial numbers under the bonnet with those on the registration form.
Make sure by doing these checks you are not buying a cloned vehicle.
Rule 3: Look at the seller.
Does the seller look uneasy when you talk to him/her, and do they look you straight in the eye or do they avoid eye contact when answering.
When you ask a question to they skirt around a direct answer.
Do they look like racers if so the engine will have been raced and the bargain wont be so good after all.
Your eyes will tell the story and is your most important weapon.
Your heart will always say yes if the car is the right colour, right shape, right anything so you have to keep a close watch on that (see the eye comes into it again).
Your brain always let's you down when spending money so watch it like a hawk (see the eye comes into it again).

Use you eyes always if it don't look right in any way walk away.
If no documents are available, if old road tax disks are not at hand, if old MOT's or service history is absent and the car looks as if it has been repainted walk away or have it checked out by the AA or RAC.

I'm a complete car nut and change my cars far too regularly. Just buy whatever takes my fancy at any particular time. I have owned some terrible and some brilliant cars but in a perverse way have enjoyed all of them. My brain never kicks in till after the purchase but its too late then. I won't change though, having too much fun.

If I'm honest, 50% brain, 25% each for the other two (roughly).

Choosing the right car is easier these days, as the internet is a great research tool.

For those who say they don't care what others think, sorry, I just don't believe that. Image counts for a lot, like it or lump it.

1 The first thing will be my wallet: how much I can afford. 2.Second will be my brain: does it worth my money and what can be wrong.
3The last thing is my heart.
I believe that I will love my car if I am all right with my previous points

I would hope that people use their brains when making that decision because the heart is just an organ that pumps blood.
