you need to use algebra

lets say x is the width and y is the lenght. the perimeter is the two width and the two Y because there are two sides of width x and 2 sides of width y like thus

x + x + y + y = z
or
2x + 2y = z

the problem says that the width is 3 meters less. so that means that x is 3 meters shorter.

so you can rework this problem to say that

x = y-3

this is because if you where to know what y was then if you take 3 away you would get x. So, rewrite your equation like this.

2(y-3) + 2y = z

now simplify

2y - 6 +2y = z

4y -6 = z

we know what z is. it is 14 so,

4y -6 =14
y = (14+6)/4
y=20/4
y=5

hurray we are halfway done. We now know that y=5 so we can now substitude 5 into the original equation and solve for x.

2x +2y =14
2x +2(5) =14
2x +10 =14
2x = 4
x=2

so x=2 & y=5 that is the width which we agree at the begining to be X is 2.

we can check our answers 2 ways. The problem stated that the width is 3 less than the lenght. We agreed that y was the length and y = 5. So if we take 3 from y we should get 2

y-3 =2
5-3 =2 yep. we got the answer right.

The second way is to put those numbers back into the original equation and we better get 14

2x+2y=14
2*2 + 2*5 =14
4 + 10 = 14
14 = 14 yep we did it right.

P=2(l + w)
14=2(x + x-3)
14=4x-6
x=5
length=5 width=2

w=width l=length l=(w+3)

14=w+3 +w
14=2w+3
11=2w
5.5=w
