The breeder should be helping you with this question. The pup should have come home with some of the food the breeder was feeding. Changing too quickly to something else could cause tummy upsets.
Also, 7 wks is too young. I hope you didn't buy this pup from a pet store. I own Whippets and don't know of anyone who would sell a pup that young. Some will let a pup go to an experienced home at 8 wks, most keep them to 10 - 12 wks.
Pups need their mom and siblings until at least 8 wks. It's also illegal to sell a pup before 8 wks of age in many states, like California.

The breeder should have sent home a supply of the food this puppy was already eating. Any change you make needs to be gradual (over a period of 10 - 14 days) to prevent diarrhea in this very young puppy.

Some of the very best brands out there are Solid Gold, Innova, Wellness, Canidae or Timberwolf Organics. It's a matter of trial and error in finding the one that your puppy does best on.

Any diet questions i see on here I jump on answering. Natura makes a food called EVO. It is a dogs natural diet. Please look for the Natura web site and read up on it. You won't be sorry. It is as close to a dogs natural diet as you can get in a dry/canned formula with no preservatives or grain. (grain is not digested well in dogs). Raw meat, veggies, and fruits is your dogs natural diet, but it's hard to maintain that, and very expensive. EVO is a great choice. Please check them out. Read all the info they offer. You and you whippit will love it. Vets always recommend science diet and foods they sell. They don't want you to feed your dog it's natural diet because 99% of all health problems are a direct cause of diet!! No sick dogs, no vet visits. They get a kick back from selling or recommending the junk food available in their office, and even some that are on grocery store shelves!! Pet owner beware!! They are snowing you into buying their product. They really don't care if it's what makes your dog sick. People invented "dog food", not dogs. Give your dog what it deserves. It's natural diet.

Firstly great choice of pup, you will have years of fun!

Food wise, trial and error a bit at his age.
Stay clear of anything sold in a supermarket.
You need to be looking at getting a food (assuming you will be feeding complete?) that has NO artificial colourants, preservatives or anti oxidants.
The first ingredient MUST always read meat, NOT by product, or derivative.
Make sure it also isn't bulked out with too many cereals.

Don't pander to him/her whippets can be really stubborn and you will making a rod for your own back.
It may take you a little while to find a food but do your utmost not to change it to often.

Good luck :-)

Ideally he would stay with his Mom another few weeks. The age of 12 weeks is ideal for puppies. 9 weeks isn't so bad. 7 is a tad too young.

I would personally start him on a raw diet, but you can also start him on a high quality commercial diet such as Natures Variety. I would continue to vary his diet throughout his life, offering him taste options. Dogs like different foods just like we humans do!

A good premium brand -- there are many folks with strong opinions on various brands - and whippets doing well at all whippet breed events on almost evrey brand (not a hugely finicy breed at least with most individuals)

i feed my puppy and other dogs that i used to foster, Nature's Variety..its a fabulous product, i actually found out the other day that some pet supplies plus stores carry it..it costs about the same as any other good quality food, except it is way better..there are no by products in it and it is freeze dried, not heated like most food..
