Call or go to the Port Authority or bus staion in Essex County.
You will no doubt be taking a bus from there to Port Authority in NYC. Port Authority at 42nd St is your bus station in NYC. There is a bus station in Washington Heights that handles NJ travelers but most busses stop at the Port Authority station. If for any reason Essex County bus station can't provide a schedule just call Port Authority in NYC. They should be able to tell you when busses leave and arrive from Essex County to Port Authority.
