It's not the odor, it's the reaction from the fumes from the onion on your poor eyeballs. I have had luck with the running water thing, I have actually done the "hold a piece of bread in your mouth while cutting the onion" thing (wasn't bad, but the bread got soggy, but the best was wearing swimming goggles. Worked a treat!

Refrigerate the onion first. Also if you refrigerate the knife you will be using that helps the vapours to ease up a bit. Now the wooden toothpick thing was a half right answer. Its a wooden match. If you strike it just before you cut, the sulphur absorbs the vapours.

Hello,
Keep in mind everybody has their own remedy. The thing that works best for me is to be sure the onion is cold. Place the onion in the freezer for one hour. It should be ice cold to the touch. Chop at will. Be sure to chop quickly however before the onion warms up. Hope this helps.

The candle idea should work as it draws the fumes, personally I don't normally suffer but on the few occasions I have I peel them straight into a bin, then quickly run them under a cold tap before chopping them, works for me, when I need it.
Oh and as soon as you are finished put everything straight into a bowl of water, except the onions, they should go in a dish and be covered until you put them in to cook.
Hope this is helpful to you.

Having worked in professional kitchens and cut up thousands of onions i can tell you this. The best way to avoid it is a well ventilated area. You can do this by cutting them by your stove witht he hood vent on high (provided you have one. Or get a draft going through by cutting by your window with a fan in it on high and leaving another window open. The vapors can't affect you if they're being constantly blown away, and you dont have to look silly holding a match in your mouth or wearing goggles :-)

I tired all the tricks, including freezing them a few mintues, chopping under running water, holding a slice of bread crust in my mouth, buring a candle near where you're chopping them, and several others. None of them worked.
The ONLY thing that works for me is to chop them in my food processor. ;)

The wooden toothpick in your mouth is used as a reminder to breath only through your mouth, and not your nose. As soon as you have it peel, throw away the skin.
Only breath through your mouth and you won't water...

A small fan set on the counter beside where you are cutting the onion will blow the fumes away before they reach your eyes.

I was told to put a piece of bread between my teeth, it soaks up the smell & juice. But, I just lay a slice on my chopping board. Try it, it works.
