the proper answer to this NO.
There is no CRIMINAL Legislation to cover mental abuse, as it is a sunjective term with no stated cases in law ... yet.
However, there is civil legislation where you can sue a person for mental abuse... but this is extremely hard to prove... especially with Police investigations.
You would have to prove that the abuse was malicious, and not in keeping with common rules of investigation... its not enough that you have taken exception to it, it has to be true abuse.
There is a formal complaints procedure, and i suggest you start with this.
Go to the station, and state you wish to make a formal complaint against the officer.
You will be spoken to by an officer of rank no less than sergeant.
You should state the nature of your complaint, giving specific examples dates and times (without getting upset or angry or you will just be asked to come back when you are calm)
The seargent will then make a decsion if they consider your complaint a substantive issue, or whether the officers actions are normal for an inve4stigation and your are being too touchy.
If he upholds the complaint the officer will give their account.
From that point if the explanatino is good enough they will get words of advice, if not it will be referref to the indipendant police complaints commisison (IPCC)
Or if you honestly feel like the police are ignoring your complaint, go straight to the IPCC and give your complaint there.
But honestly consider that only 20-35 % of complaint are upheld as most people just dont realise how robust police investigations are,a nd the effect this has on people, child or not.
be honest with yourself before you drag yourself through the process, and drag your child.
but if you truly have a case, then go for it, an abusive officer has no place in the modern police

police should not be interviewing a child without an 'appropriate adult' being present. An appropriate Adult is a parent/guardian/family member or social worker. Their role would be to oversee the interview and that it is conducted in a fair and just way. Surely if you are able to show documentation regarding the use of funds of your house sale you should be entitled to legal aid. You need legal advice my friend asap, look around and try several solicitors. Good luck to you.

If a child is interviewed by the police as part of their investigation then they are obliged to have an appropriate adult present at the interview. If there wasn't an "appropriate adult" which, doesn't neccessarily have to be either of the parents, then you could approach your local Police Authority with your complaint. The Police Authority are the ombudsman/watchdog tasked with making sure the police act in accordance with the law and established procedures. You should be able to get the details for your local Police Authority by simple search on Yahoo!

if you make a complaint the police are duty bound to investigate and inform you of the outcome.
you do not require legal aid because you dont need legal aid to make a complaint.
put your complaint in writing and send it recorded delivery addressed to the chief superintendent at your local police station. also send a copy of the letter to yourself and when it arrives leave it sealed, if you dont hear within 14 days.
contact the local police authority of your concerns etc.
after that then contact solictor but it wont get that far

a police officer has to follow all laws just as a citizen.if he violates those laws he is subject to the same penalities as anyone else.how in the world could a officer use mental abuse during and after a investigation. very little time is ever spent around a child.they are dealt with in short period of time.you will have a very hard time in proving your case.
if you give me more information i might be able to tell you more.

If you believe it to be true and you can prove it then yes.
Why do you not think you can get legal aid?
Whichever way you go you must first write the the police complaints commissioner then followtheir proceedures whilst they investigate
