Up to six months is suggested as the limit.
As long as it's sealed & not freezer burned.
I've personally gone longer, & cooked well.

There shouldn't be any problem with something frozen for 3 months. (I have eaten things that have been frozen for over a year). But what makes the determination is how it was packaged/wrappped and whether or not it has gotten "freezer-burned." (But even freezer burned foods can be salvaged)

If it has been wrapped properly, (no exposure to air) then you can cook it any way you want (best is in a crock pot).
If it has any freezer burn, you should definitely use a crock pot. If cooking in the oven, use a casserole dish with a tight lid, and water or broth. Or, wrap tightly in aluminum foil with water or broth and place aluminum foil wrapped roast in a baking dish or pan with1" or higher sides.

Cooking with these methods assure you of a tender, moist roast.

Yes, 6 mos. is a good guideline.
As long as it was sealed well, no freezer burn.
