when I was growing up we had what my Mom called soup plates.they were shallow bowls as big as plates.perfect for stews and soups.
I personaly have not seen these type of bowls for 20 years or so.so I guess they arent somthing you can just pick up anywhere.I would appreciate any information on where i could purchase or order such a set of these on line.thank you.

Plenty of the more expensive dinnerware patterns have what you're looking for. The problem is they're not called "soup plates," they're called "rimmed soup bowls." Try searching for that and you'll find lots of nice patterns.

I know the Swedes still use these. A regular plate is a "tallrik" and the kind you want is a deep plate or a "djup tallrik." (Plural: "djupa tallrikar.") Go to the Ikea site and see if they have any available here in this country.

We had some of those when I was growing up, too, and I never saw them anywhere else until I went to Sweden with my job. They're quite common there. Check Ikea. Call it a 'deep plate' or a 'soup plate' or a 'djup tallrik' (or use the plural) in their site search box, and see what you come up with.

I love them and they are next to impossible to find now days. I guess they don't hold enough soup for a meal. These soup plates were part of five or seven course meals, so the guest/family did not want to fill up on soup like we do now.

I got a set of 4 from Carol Wright catalog. They called them pasta bowls, but it is the same thing. You also might check E-Bay. sometimes you can find stuff like that there

Specialized plates belong to a more leisurely era;-}
when meals consisted of several courses.
They are considered antiques today.
Here's a modern alternative.
