Shia and Sunni are two different strands of islam, in the same way that Catholics and Protestants are in christianity.

They do it because they are ignorant and backward.

Im Iraqi, but i am an Assyrian, not an Arab, and a Christian, not a Muslim.

Basically Iraq is not a true country, it was cobbled together after World War 1 by the British. Various peoples were originally promised their own independant nations, these were the Arab Shia, Arab Sunni, Kurds and Assyrians. Turcoman, Chaldeans, Armenians, Yazidi, Mandeans and Shabaks were also promised their own protected areas.

The british betrayed all these people, and gave the whole area over to the Arab Sunnis.

It was EXACTLY the same with Yugoslavia, and look what happened there as soon as their strong man Tito died!

I have to say also that most Iraqi Sunnis are not Islamicist, most are actually Baathists. This is a political doctrine, a form of pan arab National Socialism that has nothing to do with Islam. In fact it was invented by christians, and introduced to Iraq by a christian, Michael Aflak. The extremist Sunni element in Iraq is actually made up of Al Qaeda influenced foriegners, mainly Saudi, Palestinian, Jordanian, Egyptian, Algerian and Pakistani terrorists. There are signs now that Iraqi sunnis are tired of these animals and are kicking them out.

Not all Shia are extremist, it is mainly the followers of Al Sadr and his Mahdi army, these idiots are in the pay of Iran, who is responsible for much terrorism in Iraq.

So its not just about religion, however there has always been problems between Sunni and Shia, just like in the middle ages Catholics and Protestants slaughtered each other.

Also, many people forget that in all this, Iraqs Christians, Yazidi and Mandean religious minorities are suffering terrible persecution.

Shlama!

It has to do with history. I'm in a Medieval studies class, and the teacher just had a whole class on the early history of Islam. Iraq is a very important location, and indeed the whole reason why the sects of Shia and Sunni exist, that took place in Iraq. I suggest you look it up (it is the period right after Mohammed's death and his successors were ruling), because i can't recall it all correctly and there are too many funny arabic names for me to type them out.

As for not understanding why, that's a defeatist attitude! They have their reasons, and often those reasons aren't what we think they are. Step outside your own worldview for a minute and try to visualize theirs. Islam isn't hard. You just kinda have to work at it a bit. What you think is stupid, they think is important. And seeing as they are busy threatening to bomb ***us*** over these "stupid" things, we'd probably best consider them important, too.

The divide is political. They are at it to decide who gets power. The United States has installed a Sunni government there because it favors us. If it was a true democracy then there would be a Shia government since Shia are the majority there. But we don't like that, becuase then the Shia will be Iran's ally.

Sunni elect their leaders by vote or appointment.

Shiite elect their leaders based on their blood relations to the descendants of Prophet Mohammed.

The rest is basically the same.

Whatever fighting happens between Sunni and Shiite in Iraq or elsewhere will usually be over political differences as to who will assume leadership positions.

Free and Fair elections is an excellent way to unite the Sunni and Shiite.

Because of lack of education. They don't know the religion very well and the only thing they do is to twist the words in the holy book and use them to justify their bloody actions. There weren't such things during the time of the Prophet Muhammad because people were aware of the real message of the religion and they had unity.

p.s. I'm a Muslim

God tell us in the quran not to divide your selves into sects because it will destroy us. Governmental bodies spread evil ideologies and implant racism and separation in the heart of the people. Why, to enable them to hate each other and to start civil wars so they can kill each other off. Less work for them.
The Muslims is letting them win. How stupid many of them are.

When our beloved prophet Muhammad died peace and blessings be upon him. The ummah (nation) argued that who would be the next in line to lead the Islamic religion. So most said it should be Abu Bakr (a.s) one of the prophets eldest and very close companions or Ali (a.s)the son in law of the prophet..so they divided into groups...there are a few differences with the praying of both the sects..but nothing really major..They both believe in Allah azzawajal and Muhammed (s.a.w) as the last and final prophet. So the main difference is not religion rather it is Leadership !!

End times prophecy says that here will be a big battle between the two groups. Many believe the US occupation of Iraq means the end times are here.

I think tradition is vital to our lives. Where we belong. But some people think their interpretation of the traditions of their religion is a reason to kill people whose ancestors learned about different history. Try to think like the people who were there at the time. And then think how we need to think now.
