What do they drop in the Mimm's Champagne at the end of the movie "Moonstruck," and why?

It's an amaretto-soaked sugar cube. I've had this same drink at good Italian restaurants on special occasions. I'm not entirely sure where or why the custom started, but it's really delicious.
