Ok spare me the lecture, they are not my puppies and the people they belong to were already extensively lectured by me. It happened its over, now I would like to give them advice on what to feed the mother to keep her healthy and producing milk for her pups. Yes I know there is a pet overpopulation problem and I don't agree at all... it was an accident the mother is being spayed and there's nothing else I can do. Any advice about nutrition for the mother and tips about whelping would be greatly appreciated.

She is a medium sized dog with 8 pups.. the birth was normal and fairly easy. I would just like some tips to give them on caring for the mother, keeping her healthy. What if anything she needs to keep her nutritional needs satisfied while nursing. Any other advice about the care of pus and mother would be appreciated greatly.. Also TRUST me when I say I am making sure she gets spayed and I will help pay for it myself if I have to.

Hmm somehow I dont think "corn chow" will do her any good. Puppy chow is garbage filled with corn and by-products.

A high quality puppy food until she is done nursing. They need the extra calories and protein to produce milk--it really takes a lot out of them.

I feed my bitches Purina puppy Chow within a week of being bred through 6 weeks.
The pups should be wormed witha good wormer from the vet at 2,4,6,and 8 weeks along with the moms. The pups should get there 1st shot at 6 weeks old.
I start to wean the pups at 4 weeks old i take mom away in the evening about 11 pm and I get up at 6 and make up a Puppy chow much ( very liquity ) I use goats milk but you can use water. Let teh pups eat from a shallow dish for about 15 minutes what they don't eat mom can finish. Tehn let mom back withthe pups. again at 6 I remove mom and at 10 I let the pups eat the much and put mom back with pups and let her nurse the pups until 11. At 5 weeks make the food thicker and add a meal without mom about 12 taking mom out at 10 am.
At 6 weeks start to leave water down remove mom in the morning after the first feeding and not to return until the 10 feeding. and of course make food thicker at the 3 feedings leave the softened food down for only 15 minutes but now leave the dry food dodwn for them to munch on inbetween.
bye 7 weeks tehy should be on solid food. Let mom in with them about 3 or 4 times a day as this is the period mom will train them things like how hard to bite and other doggy manners. At 8 weeks is when they should go to new homes and if they should keep any or not find homes keep mom seperated totally and at 10 weeks she should be ready to be spayed but try to call when pups are 7 weeks to make an appoointment so if there is a waatining period you will be ready.
Good Luck

She needs access to a high quality puppy food at all times.

Mom and pups need to be checked out by the vet to be sure everyone is doing ok.

Well, when my dog accidentally had a litter of pups, we fed her puppy chow while she was nursing (and during pregnancy). We also fed her cooked chicken & rice.
