It's embarrassing and it could also be nasty as your boss is not forced to give it back to you. She may decide that if you wanted to leave yesterday she would be better off without you. You may have to prepare yourself to eat plenty of humble pie!

No, he can't force you to do anything. Worst case scenario, he fires you, you have less $ than you expected due to the brief lack of work, and he won't give you a good reference in the future. Or, you keep working for the next two weeks, then stop coming in despite his demands, and again, he won't give you a good reference in the future. Best thing you can do is let what happens, happen in your current job, and do your best to make a good name for yourself at your next job so that you won't need to rely on this guy for a reference in the future. You may want to call your future boss up and give him or her a heads up that they might be getting some angry phone calls from this guy. Unless they are friends, or involved in some sort of professional relationship, it is really unlikely that they are going to change your start date to meet his needs. Now, does your boss have a boss? If so, you should contact them and let them know what is going on, so hopefully you won't get fired.

Embarrasing maybe, but unwise definitely. Unless the reason for your having given notice has ceased to exist, how can your employer believe that you will continue to be productive and commited to your job? It also puts you at a severe disadvantage for future advancement or negotiation since your employer may now believe that you are desperate to keep your job and doesn't have to worry about keeping you motivated or satisfied.

A lot depends on your relationship with your boss.
It you have proven yourself to be a valuable employee in the past, and do have a tendency to occasionally fly off the handle, and your boss hasn't yet lined up a replacement , it may work.
But I wouldn't count on it.
There are things in life that if you do them, there's no way they can be undone.

It may be a little embarrassing, but if you like your job and they like you, I would not worry about it. We do have a right to change our minds, it is part of being a human being.

Well, it might be a little embarrassing, but you're not the first person to ever do that, and won't be the last.
