When heated, the gases inside the can or bottle will expand and they will explode. I know my local pepsi bottler has some issues because of this this summer. Their 24 ounce bottles were randomly exploding from the heat in large quantities. The ones that actually made it to the stores were exploding in the back rooms if they were even bumped.

In cold temperatures, the liquid will freeze and expand causing cans to explode. Larger bottles will stand up to cold a bit better because it takes longer for the larger amount of liquid to freeze. Smaller bottles may stretch a bit but remain sealed even when frozen solid.

Basically, cans do better in heat but break easily when frozen. Bottles handle cold better but will explode faster in the heat.

The soda in the hot car is not likely to burst the can but the flavor is kind of off when you eventually drink it.

Cold weather is more spectacular. I left an unopened can in my car last winter and it blew apart the can upon freezing. That sprayed cola fizz all over the dashboard where it froze on contact as a brown foam.

I speak from experience.
Leaving soda in a car in extreme hot or cold temps will cause the can to explode. (And leaving soda in a closed car accelerates the extreme temps.)

Diet soda seems more prone to this, for whatever reason.

Uh, obviously heat will begin to break it down and it will go flat faster. Cold can cause freezing if the temp is low enough. Common sense.
Plus one will be warm, one will be cold when you open them

Soda is only harmful if you drink it. Don't drink it at all, it isn't good for you. Drink flavored iced teas instead.
