it's a bit worrying that you need free food for the poor thing, but if you go to the major catfood manufactures websites you can usually apply for free samples. :O)

You should watch the newspaper coupon ads, they sometimes have Iams or other good quality cat food coupons in them. Sometimes there ARE coupons for a free can as well. Also, you need to watch the coupon you find, sometimes you can find a $3 off of ANY size dry food, just buy the smallest bag. One Target I go to sells the very small bags of Iams for 3.49. I had $3 coupons, so I got Iams cat food bags for .49 each.
As for the people saying bad things about you getting a cat that you may not be fully able to afford to give the top quality food available, dont' worry about them. They wouldn't say that to people who are on welfare/wic for having kids they couldn't afford.

You probably won't find free cat food. If you couldn't afford the food, you shouldn't have gotten a cat. PetSmart always has a coupon book when you go inside the store. Also, you can apply to get coupons through your email. They always include cat food coupons. Make sure you buy a good-quality kitten food from the pet store though because most grocery store food doesn't contain that much nutrients for the kitten. Also, I would use dry kitten food because it gives them a less chance of having diarrhea which wet food can cause.
Make sure you take the kitten to the vet for it's set of shots which should have started at 6 weeks of age. They are crucial to protect the cat from deadly diseases.

I don't know where you live, but here if you go to Pet-smart on Tuesday's and Thursday's, there is usually a representative in the store from Science diet. It is a good food to give, and the Rep will give you coupons for the food. I wouldn't recommend caned food (only as a treat once in a while), the ash content in wet foods is not good for cats, especially kittens and older cats. They also send out flyer's in the mail. If you don't get the flyer's, they always have them in the store.

I dont know if you can get free cat food but you can go to a pet store like petsmart and there is so cheap food there and if not there is some usually at a gas station that is even cheaper. I hope this helps

If you have a local feed store, they normally have free cat/kitten samples. You could also try Petco or Petsmart and they always have good deals going on. Talk to an associate about what's good for your kitten, they'll help. You can even bring the kitten with you!

You defiantly need to be responsible and get good food and that isn't free.Cats aren't cheap and shouldn't be treated as such either. You need to budget and make sure that your kitten is fed with a good kitten food as it is extremely important to their development and contains much needed vitamins and minerals that older cats don't need as much.Sorry if this sounds cold or mean but if your looking for free food should you really have a cat? What about shots, and vet visits? and accidents that are emergencies? what then? will it suffer because you haven't the money? If you want to be a responsible pet owner you need to learn to sacrifice and give them everything they need.Again Im sorry if this sounds mean its not ment to .Good luck
