Why do many people who claim to be Christians act in such an un- Christlike manner?

What god allows a child to be born and considered sinful. A child born who is not baptized and happens to die goes to purgatory.
This irks me. A child is the most pure of all, yet if that child dies before baptism, he/she goes to purgatory, as he/she is not worthwhile in heaven.
Pretty sad.
Another would be is this Christian god is very vengeful, very punishing... pretty sad way to believe.

is there an actual Hell or place that people go to when they have not accepted christ? If Jesus loves everyone and he is so forgiving how could he burn your soul forever?
