If there was a "perfect entity" then He would know that you were being disingenuous by merely believing in Him to avoid punishment. Of course if He was perfect, he wouldn't condemn you to burn in a fiery Hell just because you did not believe (you can not be perfect and vengeful at the same time). This is why Pascal's Wager fails miserably every time.
*Cheers*

I am agnostic after living in a few religions & studying several others. This is an intelligent informed choice. I'm agnostic rather than atheist, because I always try to keep an open mind. The bible has many quotes. I've read one in its entirety & a lot of several other versions. Which parts of the bible do you choose to follow? I like "Judge not, lest ye be judged!"

Well, I'm sure he knows it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong - so it wouldn't be a huge surprise to him.
I think it will boil down to "for in the way you judge, you will be judged"
But I like to think of God and faith like the discovery of physics and engineering. Yes, without that knowledge I can still live a life and build myself a crude shelter, but with this information, there is nothing I couldn't build.
So I'm sure he would forgive me for living a life without faith, while still being disappointed I never discovered how to make the most of the life I was given.

If you are an agnostic according to the bible you will not be somewhere you don't believe in. It is clearly stated in John 3.16 that whomsoever believes in Me(Jesus/God/Holy Spirit) and is baptised will not die (the soul) but live with me in Heaven. that is the basic tenantof Christianity. You have to have genuine faith. I have paraphrased it a bit. I get the feeling that you are not totally agnostic so try talking to a Pastor or reading the NIV bible for your own insight. I think you can be saved. God bless.

There's a saying "You may not believe in God, but God believes in you." Don't know if that helps any.
PS: I don't God ever expects us to have all the answers or understand everything - we never can! Just the fact that you're asking these questions means you are on the right path. Keep searching and question - God will be there when you need him no matter what.

God is infinitely reasonable and forgiving. If you had been a good person God would be pleased with you. He might be less pleased if he knew that you had only been good out of fear of punishment, but oh what the hell, let him in too!
God actually doesn't pay any attention to religion. That is our thing.
Religion to God is like kindergarten to adults..
oh that's nice that you can do that, now don't cry Johnny, lovely fingerpainting Lisa. Ugh oh, little Heather has a load in her diaper.....has anyone seen the handi-wipes?

People are not safe since the reason for believing is to cya. "Sure we believe in god, it's better than the alternative" That's not going to get them past the pearly gates either.
I am agnostic, and I can wholeheartedly say that every religion is a man-made pile of . They are all made up fantasy stories. The only reasons that people believe these fairy tales is fear of mortality, lack of education, no logical reasoning abilities, and/or brainwashed since birth to believe it. If our parents never told us the truth about Santa Claus, there would be adults that still believe in him, and wonder why he never brings them anything.
How a person lives is more important than following stupid religious dogma.

If there is a God, then that God gave humans free will and a free mind to think with. Live a good life and be kind. The rest will take care of its self. Do not be scared and follow the rest of the sheep, do what is in your own heart.

That's kind of where I'm at now. All I can figure is, I did believe, and I did everything I could to understand. So, if a God existed who demands that we know Him, He would make Himself available. And, no, I don't think He would appreciate "Pascal's Wager" (which is the pragmatic approach you describe).

God will judge you based on your own actions and the knowledge of the Law written in your heart.
If you don't like to be lied to, then you realize it's wrong to lie. Then, every time you've ever told a lie, you judge yourself.
If you don't like it if someone steals something of yours, that shows you understand that it's wrong to steal. So if you have ever taken anything that didn't rightfully belong to you, you have judged yourself and you are guilty.
The list goes on, but you get the point. You have broken the Laws that God has written on your heart, and for THAT there is judgement.
But if you realize how much God loves you, enough to come to earth as Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and die for YOUR sins in order to pay the peanlty for YOUR sins (crimes against God), that when He died on the cross it was to die for YOUR sins, and so you ask God to forgive you for those sins, and you turn from living selfishly and turn to start living for God, then He can grant you the pardon you don't rightfully deserve.
Now, when you stand before God, you will have no excuse. You have read the answer and you will be held accountable for what you could have acted on.
I serve God because I love Him. I love Him because He first loved me and shed His blood on Calvary's cross.
We have ALL sinned, and we ALL fall short of God's glory, but sin pays us back in death. But God loved us so much, that He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, that if we would put our trust in Him, we would NOT be condemned, but we would be able to live forever in heaven.
