First of all, you're getting (and will get) lots of responses from people who hate Mormons and like to slander them in their free time. They claim that Mormons believe all kinds of stuff that we don't believe. My advise...ignore them. They're hateful and full of lies about Mormons.

First of all, most Mormons enjoy sharing what they believe....feel free to ask your friend anything you want. You won't offend her.

So, here it is in a nutshell.

Mormons believe that God always reveals his truth, his will, and guides and directs his church through Prophets.

Some of these prophets were in the Old testament. All of the prophets taught God's truth and proclaimed the divinity and atonement of Jesus Christ.

There were also prophets in the Americas that did the same thing. They wrote down their words as well.

After Christs death, the apostles were gradually killed and slowly the truth dimmed from the earth. The same happened in the Americas. There was a period of time (from about 400 ad to 1900 ad) where God's church did not exist on the earth. Prophets did not walk the earth.

Read the Joseph Smith Story (about a 2 minute read):
http://scriptures.lds.org/en/js_h/contents

Joseph Smith was searching for the truth. God and Jesus Christ appeared to him and told him that none of the existing churches were HIS church. Over time, he was called to be the first Prophet in modern times. He was directed to an ancient record and given the ability to translate it. That record is known as the Book of Mormon.

He was directed to establish Christ's church on the earth once again. He was taught the truth about how men can obtain salvation. He taught many other things that men can do to be happy.

Since Smith, there has continually been a prophet on the earth. Today, the Prophet is Gordon B. Hinckley.

The official name is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" Mormon is a nickname (....and a VERY cool ancient prophet!).

Some will claim we're a cult or not Christian. We're not a cult, we are Christian.

Mormons encourage people to learn a bit about our teachings and read the Book of Mormon. After reading it, pray to the lord with a sincerity and ask him if it's true.

Please don't listen to the negative sources. Mormons are really great people who believe in very good things. Check out this website below.

Basically, Mormons believe that we are all children of a loving Heavenly Father who loves us and wants us to return to Him someday. He wants us to be happy. He sent His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to come to earth and die for us so that we can have the opportunity to repent and return again.

Ask your friend more about the church. I'm sure he can give you better answers than many of the ones found here on Yahoo. There are too many misconceptions about the LDS church from non-members and even former members.

I would agree that this isn't the best forum to ask a general question like this. Like the others have said, talk to a Mormon and ask questions; then come to your own conclusions. If I wanted to know more about laws I'd ask a lawyer. If i want to know what color works best for my bedroom walls, I'd ask a interior design specialist. But in the end it's my decision on whether they told me sounds good or crazy.

I will say that some of things you may hear are true about the church, but these "beliefs" are not necessarily doctrine. Much like "purgatory" for the catholic church (the Pope recently denounced it's existence). Plus, many of these "beliefs" really don't make any personal deference as to whether you get to heaven or not. Just like many believe that "good works are not needed to get to heaven. In the end it's up to you to do your own research and make your own decisions. good luck

A. Mormons do believe, very firmly, in God's word. B. Mormons do accept the Bible as the word of God, but not THE word of God. C. There is nothing in the Bible that says no more prophets of God. In fact, there is nothing in the Bible about the Bible. Why do you believe what you do? And why are you so ignorant of what Mormons believe?

The Mormon church sees God as the Supreme Being of the universe. However, He gradually acquired that position over a long period of time by living a perfect and righteous life. God the Father has a body (flesh and bones). The Christian church proclaims God as eternally and infinitely supreme. He is the same today as always. He is a spirit Being.

The Mormon church teaches that humans exist as spirit beings before their birth. At physical birth, bodies are given to these spirits. They are also given an opportunity for free-will choice. The physical world represents a period of probation. The status of a person in the afterlife is determined by the way that person lived their life on Earth. If the person lived by a satisfactory standard, (including the fulfillment of Mormon temple obligations) that person has the potential to become a god in the after-life. They can also produce "spirit children" to populate a world of his own (like God did with the earth). The Christian church holds that humans do not exist as spirits prior to being born into the world. Humans cannot attain godhood or populate other worlds with "spirit children."

The Mormon church views Jesus and Satan as spirit brothers and sons of God. God put forth His plan of salvation for the world, and Satan proposed his own plan. Jesus accepted the Father's plan and offered to implement it as the Savior. The Father chose Jesus, and the spirit of Jesus was given a body through the virgin Mary. He was crucified on a Roman cross, and rose from the dead three days later to establish His deity. The character and life of Jesus is attainable by anyone who performs at such a righteous level. The Christian church teaches that Jesus Christ has existed eternally as the Son of God, the second "person" of the Trinity. Jesus took on human flesh about 2000 years ago and was born into the world through the virgin Mary. He was crucified on a Roman cross for our sins, and rose from the dead three days later to establish His deity.

THE ARTICLES OF FAITH
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

History of the Church, Vol. 4, pp. 535–541

1 WE believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
7 We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
9 We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
12 We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
13 We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

...take some time and "google-up" Joseph Smith... He was the original founder of the "cult" that their leaders ware "special underwater" and have "skewed" Scripture to state that Jesus will be returning to America and not to the Mt. of Olives as Scripture accurately foretells... the list goes on and on... google it up and se for yourself... The book of morman is a "religious" bible "knock-off" of rants from Joseph Smith and company...
