A few years ago, I started to notice that whenever I ate apples, my throat, my tongue, my lips, and the inside of my ears (which sounds weird, I know) began to feel really itching after just a few bites. It also felt like I had something hard and scratchy stuck in my throat and these symptoms would not go away until about 20 minutes later after I had drank about 3 glasses of water. I thought it was kind of strange since I had been eating apples my whole life and that has never happened but, I decided to stop eating them. At the beginning of last year, I ate a pear, and the same thing happened. Just a few weeks ago I tried eating a plum and I had the same results. So as of now, I can't eat nectarines, plums, apples, or pears without getting any of those symptoms. I don't know if it's an allergic reaction, or what. I'd really appreciate if someone could help me figure out what's wrong.

Thanks! :]

By any chance do you have birch trees in your area? People who have an allergy to birch pollen can also develop an allergy to apples. Allergies to fruit are common. I suggest you avoid what you know you react to and see an allergist.

It could be you are having an allergic reaction to something that was used in growing the food. A pesticide or a chemical they could be sprayed on it for growth enhancement and not the fruit itself. Wash the fruit or vegetable an extra amount. Could explain why you sometimes have a reaction and sometimes not, since some may or may not be treated while growing. Cooking the food more than likely has helped to remove the product from the fruit or vegetable.

Are you eating them raw? If so, you might have allergic reactions to raw fruit, but not cooked fruit (like applesauce or something like that). I know what you mean though...it is very strange. A couple months ago I was eating an apple (I like apples but don't eat them very often). Like you, after a few bites I noticed that my mouth felt very itchy, my lips swelled up, and it felt like there was something stuck in my throat. I got scared, because I'm severely allergic to nuts and have to go to the ER everytime I accidentally eat something with nuts in them. The reaction to the apple was different, because after about 30 minutes, the itchiness was gone, although my lips stayed swollen for a few hours. Like I said, there's something about raw fruits that can cause allergic reactions in some people, but eating them cooked (or without the peel) eliminates the allergy. I'm including some info with this...Hope this helps.

It sounds like an allergic reaction. They can develop suddenly after years without any sort of symptoms (latex allergy is a common example of this).

Do you have the same problem with canned fruits? It could be a reaction to the chemicals they use on the fruits. If you have the same problem with canned fruits, then avoid anything in the same "family" as those that you have problems with. You should also let your doctor know (if you haven't) so that it will be in your records.

Its time for an allergist to see you. Some allergic reactions are mild, some are not. Allergic reactions to things dont always happen as a small child. People in their teens or 20's can suddenly become allergic to things, and sometimes even later in life.
Refrain from those fruits and ask your doctor to refer you.

I have a really strong reaction to eating pears as well, I get pains in my stomach, also from eating Kiwi..who knows why, it may be a food intolerence as opposed to an allergic reaction....I also can't eat eggs on their own, but I can eat them if they are baked in something, etc.

Check with a doctor, he may run an allergy test.

It is called oral allergy syndrome. Do you also get hayfever in the spring? I used to be allergic to nearly all raw fruits and vegetables. Just getting the juice in my hands would make them break out in a rash. After being on allergy desensitation shots for five years for pollen allergies, my allergy to raw fruits and vegetables went away! Now I can eat lettuce, watermelon, carrots, cantalope, and other fruits and vegetables.
