I think religion started partially to work as laws today do, I think it has stuck because it is now a way to explain things that we have no explanation for. Death is scary for most people, but believing there is an afterlife helps some cope with death of loved ones and thoughts of their own death. Some people have trouble functioning or wanting to go on if they do not think life has a huge meaning other then just the scientific ones. So religion helps people cope and gives them hope.

Religion was created by man to control the masses. Its a very powerful thing. The teachings within religions is not completely bad, unfortunately the power and control is nothing to do with "God" or whatever folk call him/her/it.

'Religion' means following rules. That they sometimes help is, surely, self-evident.
As a Chrsitian I am not too struck on the majority of 'religions' I prefer to follow a Man who leads into fulfilment.

To explain the stuff, that that weird guy with long hair and a beard, dressed in white, forgot to do experiments on, the morning after that night out when he got completely pissed, because his head felt like it was was about to do a really big bangy thing.

So that some people can influence others for whatever purpose. at one time it was to gain or maintain power but in modern times with our political systems I think it is just that some people get off on having power or influence over others

Great question ! :-)
The answer depends on what side you are looking from.
From the true God Jehovah's point of view , it is to help people come to know him and serve him correctly., and in a way that pleases him.
But from Satan's point of view religion , or I should say , false religion is a tool to deceive people into false worship.
False religion of all sorts is not backed by God , but instead by Satan , and it though pagan unGodly teachings like the immortality of the soul , hell fire , and the trinity that he keeps many people confused.
In this confused state they are actually following Satan and not Jehovah.
