If your hair is naturally straight or if you begin with already dry/damaged hair, this will be a big challenge. You want the curl to last a 'really long' time. Without a perm, this is usually for the day as oil on the hair, weather conditions and gravity will win over any styling treatment you can do at home. Even with the myriad of products on the market. Once on the hair, the so called life of the product is usually understood to mean a few hours. Once you sleep, that curl relaxes. Water of course reverts it to it's original condition. A perm, when well done and needed conditioning, will not be as harmful as daily, intense inferno sessions of direct application of heat to the hair. Basically, you need to decide, how much effort do you want to devote to curls on a daily basis.

Buy curl mousse or spray. You can't make your hair curly for a long time without a perm or a little damage.
