Sure there most vets will.

I had a cat which peed all over the place and I just took her in a couple of weeks back and had her put to sleep.

Of course you can take them to the shelter but chances are that they will be put down later.

So what's better ending their life quickly or putting them thru the stress of prison?

The vet will either put the dog to sleep or ask you to sign the dog over to them so they can find a home for it. Some vets may refuse to put the dog to sleep if your only reason is because you don't want the dog. You can take the dog to your local animal shelter and they will put it to sleep at your request. They may have a small fee, or it may be free.

Why on earth would you do such a thing? You would actually kill your dog because you don't want it?

As the dog's owner, you are responsible to exhaust all options to provide the absolute best care for your dog.

If your dog isn't the "best dog in the world", it's because you aren't the "best owner".

Please don't ever get another animal. You should also avoid having children.

Will a vet euthanize your healthy, normal dog? None of the ones I know. Proper vets will not destroy your dog because you suffer from a lack of compassion and common sense.

If you are unable to provide the best care for your dog, find the dog a proper home - the best one you can find. Post listings on-line on petfinders, craigslist, or in your local paper, on community bulletin boards at vet clinics or pet supply stores (not ones that sell live animals).

You could release the dog to a no-kill animal shelter. If you can't find a no-kill shelter, look through the pets section of the newspaper for rescue groups (usually advertising dogs or cats), or search for them on-line or on petfinders. Call all of them that take dogs, or your breed of dog.

Don't be lazy. Make an effort. A big effort, if that's what it takes. You owe this to your dog, and it is your responsibility.

What you are suggesting is incredibly cruel and thoughtless.

Not if there is nothing wrong with it. Just take your dog to the humane society and there they give them a full physical and any treatment the animal might need.

But if the dog is very agressive, or has a condition that will prevent them from adopting the dog out, they will put the dog down. But if perfectly healthy, they will not put the animal to sleep.

Our pets are still property. The dog is your property, and if you requested it be put down, the Vet would inquire why, ask if it has bitten anyone in the last 10-20 days, and may even ask if you had considered placing it into a new home? If you insist on having it put to sleep, the Vet can refuse and you can go elsewhere or he will do the job you are paying him to do.

I put two healthy dogs down because they were fear biters. I had managed to protect the public from them but they actually turned on one of the other dogs that they lived with, played with, slept with and I couldn't risk the safety of all of my dogs, them included. As well as the safety of the public. It tore my heart out and I couldn't even speak of them without crying for over two years. But, I also had a valid reason for putting down two physically health dogs.

I am sorry to hear of your loss. It is a very difficult thing to go through, and I wish you the best. You usually get the option of being with your dog if you want to be. If you are not comfortable with that, you can wait in the lobby, or even go home and wait. If you live where you can still bury pets, as some places have ordinances against it, you can take her home and bury her right away, or you can opt to have her cremated. Then, you can keep her ashes in a pretty jar for as long as you like, or spread them somewhere she liked to play. The vet will shave a small spot on her paw or leg to place the injection. Then, they will give her an injection, just like when you have vaccines, only she will simply go to sleep and not wake up. She will be in no pain. All the best to you. I always remind myself that I will see them again someday. That makes it easier for me...

The veterinarian I work for will refuse to euthanize a healthy animal. Believe it or not, we see a lot of this at the vet clinic. We ask the owners to sign the dog over to us so we can find it the proper home. Why don't you take your dog to a No Kill Animal Rescue Organization?? Why would you want to end your dog's life just because you are bored with him??? I don't understand what kind of person could even consider this. Please find a good home for your dog, and DON'T get another puppy!!!!

That depends on the vet, if you dog is young, healthy and has no temperament problems they will often either tell you to turn a purebred over to rescue for rehoming, have you take the dog to a shelter or rehome the dog themselves. There is no reason for putting a nice, young, healthy dog to sleep. Dogs are not a disposable item such as a pair of out of fashion pants, please do the responsible thing and rehome your pet, train him if he is not well behaved and do not get anymore pets.

some vets do, however that does not mean it's right for you to do it. if you feel you don't want your dog anymore, contact a local no-kill animal shelter. you should've thought about the commitment a dog would be before you got it. killing a healthy dog is inhumane, and euthanizing it is just as bad. a dog is not something you can just throw away one day. what if your parents said they didn't want you anymore and euthanized you? it's the same thing. ponder on that before you decide to put your healthy dog to sleep for no reason.

Unfortunately, many vets will do this. They see our pets as property, so they will euthanize anything. I sure hope this is not something you are considering. If you wish to relinquish your dog, please contact your local no-kill shelter or the breed specific rescue group.

I am not sure how anyone could ever live with themselves if they made the decision to KILL their dog because they no longer wanted him. Owning a dog is a PRIVILEGE, not a right.

I am very lucky to work at a vets office that will report jerks that contact us to euthanize a healthy pet. Our vets will only euthanize an ill animal in which they are suffering and no treatment is available. I loose all respect for vets that will euthanize healthy pets.

Some will, and I personally believe that if you are going to just abdicate your responsibility to properly care for your pet, and you can't find a reputable rescue, a good home, and the local shelter is full, you SHOULD be there for you dog and help end its life. The vet I used to work with would try to talk you out of it, but if you insisted, you were required to hold the dog yourself to witness its death.
