depending on your state you have two classifications of firearms long guns and hand guns or commonally called concealable weapons most long guns can be displayed in a gun rack but it is not wise to do so, as they become crime waiting to happen" being stolen etc." your hand gun depending again on your state law can be displayed in plain site but not loaded or in a locked container the locked container is going to be the norm for most jurisdictions, the premis of the law is to have it beyond your immediate control. back east such New York, D.C. etc have th most restrictive gun control laws in the nation
and most age requirements are 21 years unless you are
involved in law enforcement or armed security and licenced accordinly

Check with your local police department, each state is different....Do not take anyones advice on this site...
richocet, the law changed here in Texas Sept 1...you can now carry a handgun in the car(not on the person) without a concealed handgun license. We just arrested a guy for having the gun in the glove box, and the arrest was at 1220 am techincally Sept 2...so the charges were dropped. Even though these guys are scum bag criminals it is now thier right.

In Texas you have to 18 to even own a handgun and no matter what the age you must have a concealed handgun licence to carry a handgun in a vehicle whether loaded or not.

Well, for you to have a firearm in the car, you need to have Concealed Weapon Permit. Once you buy a gun, you should be advised what do you need. Or simply ask any gun store owner to advise you.
