i have lived in many parts of NY but not the city. i have a few family members who live in the city and they say it is LOUD.

Very noisy, busy, lots of people pushing through. Where are they all going? I don't think they even know. Nobody really notices you, they avoid looking at you. Summer is hot as heck and unbearable. If you want to know what hell is like, visit the subway in summer. Winter, hard to get around. If you want directions, you're lucky if you find someone who speaks English. At night you hear ambulances and police sirens. Cats meowing. A decent apartment is the size of a closet. And for what?
Well, if you are willing to chance it you can live in one of the most vibrant cities. It never sleeps. The center of all arts and culture. The best creative minds gather here--DeNiro, Woody Allen, etc. Great food, always something going on. Personally I wouldn't live there. I think the people who truly appreciate it are those who grew up there. Also depends where in NYC you live--Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem.
