Most of Australia is much closer to the equator than Europe or north America and the actual seasons are different here. While we go along with the northern European idea of four seasons and designate them spring, summer, autumn and winter with the seasons opposite to those in the northern hemisphere, we don't really have four seasons.

The Aboriginal people who lived here for thousands of years before Europeans came along had their own seasons, named and identified in the same way as the northern European seasons were identified by the weather, the fruiting and flowering of trees and the behaviour and migration of animals and birds. Different groups had different seasons.

Across the tropical north, the people of the Kimberley have five seasons; the Gagadju and Yolngu people of the Top End have six; the Yanyuwa people of the southwest Gulf of Carpentaria are back to five but the Wik people of Cape York Peninsula have eight. The Walabunnba people north of Alice Springs have but two.

Unfortunately, much indigenous weather lore has been lost and we stick with the northern European seasons. It makes for ease of international communication but it doesn't represent the weather in Australia.

Yeah basically the seasons are flipped and completely opposite to the Nthn hemisphere. In Australia, where I am, this is true for the south of the country but as you move further north toward the tropics the turn of the seasons becomes less apparent until you reach the far north, then you end up with only 2 seasons. The wet season and the dry season.
In the south we still call winter the cold months and summer the hot months, its just that they occur at opposite times of the year to your seasons.

The word "Winter" indicates the cold months of the year, so obviously we call June/July/August "Winter".
I take it that you are a product of the American education system, or maybe you are just intrinsically thick.
