...and then go and tell everyone that they are going to drown in a lake of poo if they don't believe my book's prophecy, and then try to pass laws about it, and then knock on people's doors and march outside their houses telling them that an evil demon is lying to them if they don't believe me...

Yes, you'd be ridiculed, and no, the prophesy would not have been fulfilled. The ridicule would be a natural consequence unrelated to the invented prophecies.

A prophecy is a message from God. It requires supernaturally supplied knowledge about God's character or actions, often concerning future human events. Since we can't evaluate events directly, we have to use Jesus' evaluative method: We know them by their fruits. That is, we give a prophecy credence if a) it is consistent with other verified prophecies and revelatory statements and b) if it comes from a prophet of great personal holiness. Usually, but not always, a prophecy is accompanied by miraculous events.

For example, Jesus prophesied about his death and resurrection. It was consistent with prophecies in Isaiah 53 about the messiah as a suffering servant. Jesus' prophecy was supported both by his impeccable character as a man without sin and by a host of miraculous signs--healings, mass feedings, walking on water, and raising at least 3 people from the dead.
