My grandmother always told me this, but I never understood the reason behind this.

That's an old-wives' tale based on ancient superstition. It was said to contaminate the food. It comes from the same source as, if you look at a mouse while you're pregnant, the baby will have a birthmark resembling a mouse. So go ahead and do your canning. Your period will not affect it in any way.

Probably because she had cramps and wanted to just sit on the couch and relax, rather than being on her feet canning stuff, which is a lot of hot hard work! I don't blame her!

If not, then maybe she thought being on your period made you dirty and she didn't want the food to have the chance to get tainted by anything...

Or maybe she thought it made you absent minded or clumsy and you might do it wrong and make unsafe food or drop heavy glass jars...

Who knows, those are my best guesses.

Yes, I have heard this. A older lady told me that if a woman that is on her period even touches the food that is being canned that it will spoil & not can properly.:)

That's an old wives' tale. Probably b/c they had cramps and would rather lay around that do some work! LOL

Just wash your hands well, and keep everything clean, and it won't matter what is going on, you can can!

I've never heard of such a thing. It sounds like an urban legend. However, just because I've never heard of it doesn't necessarily make it not true. Check with your physician if you are concerned.

Was your Grandmother Jewish. I haven't been able to find a quote on it but it seems like it is prohibited by the faith.

If you cut yourself you will bleed more?

I know whenever I am on my period and I get a cut I bleed more. My teeth also bleed when I am on my period and I floss.
