I would suggest going to a no kill shelter, and talk to them.. they tend to work with the dogs a lot more than the kill shelters, and they will know if they have one that will fit your life..
and by adopting there there is room for them to take in another one from a kill shelter that needs handling..

No, but I would go with Golden Retrievers. They are one of the most smart breeds there are.

Get a mixed breed. I have a golden retriever, spaniel mix and he's great.
