I have one AA battery with 2100 mAh and one with 1700 mAh. Can I charge them together and then use them together in the same device or will that cause problems?

I've been an electrical engineer for 35 years. You can use the batteries together.

They have slightly different discharge rates, so they may not last quite as long as two identical batteries would, but even two identical batteries will still discharge at slightly different rates.

Same is true with recharging them. One might be a little better charged than the other.

It really makes no difference. Unless you're running some kind of strict, rigid tests to prove a point over many months, it just doesn't matter. You can use them together without causing any problems.

It's generally not a good idea to mix batteries with different current ratings. In this case, they're close enough to the same it probably wouldn't make much difference, but in general it's a good way to ruin batteries.
