Okay, all the brands Jaisy named are good examples of what to NEVER feed a dog.
Good brands: Innova Evo, Artemis, Solid Gold, Chicken Soup, Professional, Orijen, Merrick, Canidae, Avoderm, Drs. Foster & Smith, California Naturals, Wellness.
BAD brands: Purina, Pedigree, Beneful, Pro Plan, Iams, Eukanuba, Hill's Science Diet, Royal Canin, anything from a grocery store or walmart.
In general you want foods with real meat as the first ingredient, real meat or meal as the first 3-4 ingredients, whole fruits, vegetables, eggs, etc., and absolutely NO corn, wheat, white rice, soy, by-products, or dairy ingredients.

I use Nutro Natural Choice, lamb & rice formula for my Labs, but California Natural & Innova are also good foods. Basically, what you want to look for is; Meat as one of the first two ingredients (no meat-by-product), natural preservatives (vitamin E, vitamin C) NO peanut hulls, No ethoxiquin (chemical preservative-very bad) No BHA or BHT (also chemical preservatives). Just really read the ingredients and get a food that is as natural as you can find. You can also add whole foods to your lab's diet, like fruits (strawberries, grapes, bananas, oranges, blueberries, etc) and veggies (carrots, broccoli, spinage, beans, peas, etc) ABSOLUTELY NO ONIONS THOUGH! They have an enzyme that breaks down a dog's red blood cells and the dog can become anemic, smaller dogs can die from it. No chocolate either. I also give my Labs oatmeal, beef, fish, chicken, turkey, yogurt, and lots of other fresh food. I don't give them a lot of the whole foods, but they get some every day. Watch the amount of food you feed your Lab, as they become over weight easily. Once your dog is about 6 months old, start to ease back on the dog food. As an adult dog (1-2 years) you can almost always half the amount you find recomended on the dog food packages. I used this same feeding method on my first Lab and she lived to be 15 years old with very few health issues over her life span. Good luck with your Labby!

stay away from brands like: iams, purina, beneful, science diet, pedigree, alpo, ol roy, eukanuba, pretty much anything u can find at walmart or see on tv. stick with brands like chicken soup for the dog lover's soul, canidae, and innova. these r good holistic dog foods. also a lot of people say royal canin is good but it is just expensive dog food that is crap
