front line is good at getting rid of ticks,if you want to remove some by hand get a tick puller from your pet shop it hooks the tick and you pull taking the head with you,you never twist and pull ticks out as you can leave the head in,but a tick puller will make sure you have the whole tick out

Frontline is the only way to get rid of them permanently - use of the spot-on every two weeks will prevent ticks from latching on. The only other way is to pull them out - you have to twist as you pull to get the mouthparts out, but I don't imagine you want to do this for 300,000 ticks! Also there's a danger of leaving mouthparts behind, which can sometimes cause a problem.

People say covering the ticks in vaseline suffocates them, but I don't see why it would. I would just stick with Frontline because I know it works - you can also use the Frontline spray on the actual ticks and they'll drop off within the half hour.

Bayer power force granulas sprinkled in your entire yard will kill them. Keep your yard treated, keep your grass short and your dog in your yard. The granulas above dissolve chemicals into the ground when wet, water it in good and repeat as per package directions. Use a spreader if possible to make sure the application is the correct amount. I would ask the neighbor if it was ok to toss some into the edge of their yard also or offer to help them mow if they are elderly. Most towns have a code that does not allow grass or weeds over 12" tall so your last resort may be to complain to the city.

If they live out in the country they may want to invest in a few guinea hens or even chickens. They will pick a yard clean of ticks in no time and keep them gone because they search for them to eat constantly.

You still really need to use frontline or advantix on the dog so he doesn't become a food source for them or bring them in the house. If they are that bad the drops alone wont get rid of them all you have to do the enviroment too.

Why don't you use a topical solution? For about $10-$12 a month you could treat your dog. That really isn't a lot when you think about it and it safeguards you, too.
