Because "MAN" has lied about many things since the beginning of time and will for his existence. Here are some of things that scientists have said...
The world was flat.
The space between the stars and planets is a vacuum. (which was upheld with Newton's work)
Genes have the power to reproduce life.
Atoms are simple substances.
All light and heat originate in the sun or stars.

You obviously don't know your history. First of all, Copernicus didn't prove any such thing. He merely suggested a heliocentric model to explain the retrograde motion of the planets. Secondly, they weren't lying, they legitimately believed that the Sun revolved around the Earth. Also, it wasn't for religious reasons that they believed that it was because Aristotle and Ptolemy had argued fairly convincingly for a geocentric universe. At the time all the evidence spoke for the view that the Sun revolved around the Earth not vice versa, it wasn't until the 17th century with Kepler and Brahe that a heliocentric view was proven. All this demonstrates it that Christianity is not a scientific theory about the universe, it never has been, it is the way to salvation, and it is here that some Christians (Evangelicals mostly) and Naturalists are both mistaken.

Then it would follow that you also have no faith in scientists because of all the errors they have made in their evolution to the knowledge they now have, right? Was it not science that was so sure at one time that the world was flat? We are only able to work from the place knowledge is at any one time. That would be why we no longer do lobotomies. It was an accepted scientific practice not so very long ago. Science believed that Cox 2 Inhibitors were safe until very recently as well as drugs like Fen Fen. The church only knows what it is taught by science and they both have made terrible mistakes and will continue to. It's just a learning process so try to calm down a bit. They are teaching the best that they know. Good Luck and God Bless

Not knowing is not the same as lying. Aristotle 'proved' that the earth was fixed by dropping a stone from a tower and showing that it did not fall in an arch from the drop point, but instead fell straight down. He had no understanding of gravity wells. From our perspective it does appear that the sun moves.
The problems with the church are in the incoherence of its holy text; no non-contradictory set of beliefs can come out of the Abrahamic tetxts.

Nobody knew it until the brilliant PRIEST, Copernicus figured it out. He submitted his reports and calculations to the Church, and was NEVER persecuted for it.
But my dear fellow, you need to learn a little more about your subject, clearly. For you were just blithering along, blissfully unaware that Copernicus was a part (and a loyal part) of the hierarchy you are trying to decry. You have presented yourself a perfect dunce!
Go and learn.

Are you looking for approval, or are asking a genuine question? If the latter, all I can say is that I was not around during the times of Copernicus and therefore must have missed it.

Your ignorance is astonishing. The Orthodox Church never formulated any doctrine regarding the structure of the solar system and was not run by Rome. Of course, a hardcore ignoramus like you presumes that Rome is all there is to Christianity, which is quite false.

Actually, I don't remember that. I remember that the scientific community followed Aristotle in his assumption that the earth was the center of the universe...

its a shame that you are going to loose your salvation because of some miss informed old Christan leaders that didn't no the truth. just cause the Christan leaders said that the sun revolved around the earth doesn't mean God said it
