I learned it from reading and from reasoning with myself that hope and optimism was better for me at least on a practical level than despair.
I was an abused child. Abused children have an enormous problem with trust and hope and optimism.
Sure I read the bible, but I didn't limit myself to that: all good literature speaks of either hope or the lack of it. With those ideas, and years of introspection and prayer, I started learning about hope and optimism.
I'm not a 100% hopeful optimistic person. In fact, 100% hopeful and optimistic people kinda creep me out. But I'm better than I use to be.

Only from Jesus Christ are we given hope and optimism.

From reading the Bible, Psalms in particular.
Spending time with children helps. It's their nature ,they are pure in thought and it rubs off.
Spend time talking to God. Praising Him and asking for these gifts. He will surely comply.

Jesus calls the Jews who did not believe in him "WOLVES" and the Jews who did believe in him as "SHEEP". The believers should become as wise, sneaky and deceiving as the generation of Serpents/vipers otherwise they will not survive the onslaught from the disbelieving Jews ?
