Our department policy is that an officer accompanies a representative of the Coroner's office to the residence and makes a personal, face-to-face notification. If unable to make contact, then a telephone message is left for the person to contact the Department, but NO MENTION is made of the fatality until it can be made face-to-face.

The police try to send someone to the house to tell you. If you are too far away and the local police cannot help, they will tell you on the telephone. Usually, unless you specifically ask, they will just tell you there has been an accident and ask you to come immediately and give you a location. Yes, they do use the word "fatal". When my sister died, my Dad was in Maine and we were in Michigan. The State Police stopped him on the road and did tell him she had died.

Never! Strictly forbidden, major no-no. Fatalities are always, always delivered face to face. And no, they would never use the word "fatal" in any message. They would arrive at the house, not call on the phone, and if the contact called the police they would be asked to come to the station or the hospital but they would never be told their loved one was dead over the phone.

No, that's done in person. Even if the only or nearest relative is out of the area, the police normally contact the agency that has jurisdiction where that person lives and has them go to the residence. I've never heard of a death notification being done over the phone.

these calls are very delacate and they need someone to id the person and or claim the body--i always told them a family member was involved in an accident and they needed to come to the er at---then letthe chaplin, doctor etc explain what happened.
normal policy respects the person / family and does not want them to drive to the hospital all choked up / also it is more humane to tell someone via a minister or doctor what happened--good friend was called out to accident and when he came upon it he noticed car was his families car and it was ablaze (all died mother, 2 children)--we got to him before he arrived and handled the situation for him while we got him medical aid and a priest from the parish.

Yes they will, the police aren't messengers. Why should you be notified otherwise?
If your family member is the fatality they try to have a Chaplin or local Minister/Priest do it. They then try to contact you and after that they will leave a message. It's a tough one.

To the best of my knowledge they will come to your door and as far as I know they will tell you they were in an accident and then say they are sorry but they didn't survive or something to that effect
